Baehr Jr., Ernest (Ted), a long-time resident of Briarcliff Manor, Pleasantville and Somers, NY, died peacefully on Oct. 17, just weeks after celebrating his 104th birth day with three generations of family and friends at Salem Hills Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Purdy’s, NY.
An intensely private man who also enjoyed performing for an audience, he “rose to the occasion” despite the effects of his advancing years, greeting people by name, wearing the red and gold crown first given to him on his 100th birthday four years earlier, holding his 14-month-old great-grandson on his lap and making the wry jokes that were his brand of humor.
Born in New York City on Sept. 7, 1910, Ted was the only child of Ernest Baehr and Louisa Torres. His father had grown up in Duisburg, Germany and his mother, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Ted grew up in Manhattan, graduating from Stuyvesant High School and attending New York University, where he studied civil engineering. Ted spent nearly 50 years as a sales executive in the construction industry.
Ted married Aleda Van Gils of Mahopac, NY in 1939. They moved to Briarcliff in 1948, where he served as a volunteer fireman, joined a local amateur theater company and also became an avid motorcyclist. After their three children graduated from college, they moved to neighboring Pleasantville, NY.
After his wife of 46 years died in 1985, he befriended Roberta Bengelsdorf, also a resident of Pleasantville. The friendship between the two recently widowed spouses blossomed into a strong and loving mutual companionship that lasted almost three decades until his death. They lived first in Pleasantville and later at the Heritage Hills, Somers, NY.
He leaves, in addition to Roberta and her family, his three children, Guy of Luperon, Dominican Republic, Van of Santa Fe, NM and Karla of Newton, MA, and her spouse, Ann Dinsmoor. Ted also leaves two grandchildren, Amber West of Albuquerque, NM and Vanessa Baehr, and her son – Ted’s great grandchild – James Valdez Moore, and her fiancé, Peter Moore, all of Hudson, NY.

Sunday of the season and made yearly trips to Cooperstown to take the mound at historic Double Day Field.

Carpi, John Rosario, devoted father, husband and grandfather of Somers, NY, passed away peacefully at home on June 1 with his wife at his side. He was 86 years old.

He was born on November 17, 1927 in Bronx, NY, to Valerio Frank and Giovanna Carpi, who had immigrated to the United States from Italy.

John, or Sonny to his family and close friends, was many things to many people – from a colleague to a friend to a confidant to an uncle and brother. But mostly he was a father and a husband. He brought a quiet patience and smile to everything he did, whether celebrating birthdays with his children or maintaining the house.

John worked hard to achieve success for himself and his family. He sold lemons on the streets of the Bronx as a young boy and, with a knack for electronics, soon went into the electronics trade, cleaning and repairing parts. He found success with an early electronics company, the Bunker Ramo Corporation, and soon moved up to a management position.

He started his family in the South End of Hartford and soon took the risky but successful step of establishing his own business, a well-respected hearing aid dealership, in Hartford, West Hartford and Manchester, CT.

John dedicated himself to his family and friends. He was admired by all who knew him for generosity of character and willingness to lend a hand, ear and smile. And he was loved by his children who he took fishing, hiking, and skiing, though he himself did not ski. He took his family on adventures throughout his life and taught his children the art of living.

Gay, Frederick E. , born at home in Ridgefield CT on July 2, 1927, passed away early Sunday morning after fearlessly succumbing to
illness. Fred grew up in South Salem NY, living across from “his girl next door”, Alice, who later became his wife of 59 years and together made an ever growing family rich with tradition.  Just shy of celebrating their 60th anniversary in August 2008,  Alice passed away.  As his time grew shorter, he remained
content.  “I had a good run” he said, referring to all his accomplishments, including serving in the merchant marines at the helm of oil tankers sailing through the Gulf of Mexico, his career as an Arborist climbing trees, working a full career and retiring from the town of Lewisboro Highway Dept., then spending retirement working part time at Waccubuc Country Club and with his family.  In Fred’s youth, he enjoyed playing varsity football and his love of motorcycle riding never left his blood.  He played harmonica and accordion in a family band and also just recently with the senior citizens at Founders Hall.  He would play for anyone just to make them smile.  He could always be heard recounting his many life stories with family and friends.  Fred lives on through
his son Michael, his daughter Paula, and their spouses, Jan and Tony.  He had close In-laws including Margaret and Herb Norton and their family, also Fred’s brother Ralph and sister Evelyn, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins most still living in the area.  He felt blessed having lived to enjoy his 4 grandchildren grow up and give him  7 Great-Grandchildren from 9 months up to 18 years old.  Fred felt comforted in his final hours being surrounded by his family and knowing he was “going to be with Grandma again.”

Martin, Thomas Joseph Patrick died peacefully and in the presence of family on Sunday, September 28, 2014, at 71 years of age. It was in hospice care at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, New York, that he ended his more than 15-year struggle with lung compromise, which included chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and non–small cell lung cancer.

Thomas (then “Tommy”) was born on November 29, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York, to Grace (née Cosgrove) and Matthew Martin. He was the youngest of the three Martin boys. Tom graduated from his beloved alma mater, St. Mary’s High School in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, in 1960. He then attended St. John’s University’s undergraduate (biology major) and law programs. On August 10, 1968, while he was in his last year of law school, he married his sweetheart, Carol Ann Goy, at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Highland Park, New Jersey. He earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from St. John’s University Law School in 1969. After an extended European honeymoon, he accepted a position as a litigator at Kelley Drye & Warren, LLC, where he represented such clients as the Archdiocese of New York and, consequently, a number of Catholic hospitals. Tom and Carol moved from Brooklyn to Metuchen, New Jersey, as their family began to grow. After more than 12 years at Kelley Drye & Warren, Thomas was recruited by Monsignor James P. Cassidy to the post of Vice President and General Counsel of New York Medical College, Valhalla, New York; in 1981, the Martins moved from Metuchen to Katonah, New York. He then served for more than 23 years as Vice President and General Counsel of New York Medical College. In 2005, NYMC conferred upon him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Thomas officially retired in 2008.

A man who followed his conscience in all things, Tom served the community in many ways. His involvement with the Roman Catholic faith community was a constant in his life. He worked with Cardinals Cooke and O’Connor on matters relating to health care and education, and was also a board member at Lincoln Hall Boys’ Haven. He was heavily involved in the right-to-life movement and ran for public office on the right-to-life party. He acted as parish council president at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Metuchen, New Jersey. At St. Francis and then at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Katonah, New York, he sang in the choir for many years. Under the guidance of the Reverend Anthony D. Sorgie, Tom and Carol performed with the festival choir at St. Joseph’s Seminary at several Christmas concerts. Most recently, following his belief that had he not become a lawyer he would have taught, Tom fulfilled his urge to spread the word of God as a religious education instructor for young children for more than 10 years at St. Mary’s.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Carol (née Goy) and his devoted children: daughter Jennifer Grace and husband Timothy Kirker of Katonah; son Christopher Thomas and wife Kerry Martin of Maplewood, New Jersey; son Matthew Mathias of Boulder City, Nevada; and son Sean Richard and wife Katherine Wheeler-Martin of Beacon, New York. He is also survived by his adoring grandchildren, Liam Christopher (age 4), Olivia Caroline (age 4), and Serafina Kate (age 2); they were his greatest joy.
