Obituary of Alvin Glanzberg

Alvin Glanzberg of Somers, New York, passed away peacefully while surrounded by loved ones on July 7, 2017. He was 89. Born in Brooklyn, NY on March 9, 1928 to the late Sally (nee Mendlinger) and Harry Glanzberg, he was a proud graduate of Susquehanna University and took postgraduate courses at Cornell University as well as studied advanced audio/visual techniques at Eastman Kodak. Alvin served in the Army during the Korean War as a medic at the Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. An avid gardener, photographer, researcher and traveler, he also enjoyed opera, music and history. Alvin worked as a photographer and journalist, beginning his career in New Mexico. Starting out as a radio broadcaster at KGAK in Gallup, he then worked as a reporter for the Santa Fe New Mexican, the Albuquerque Journal and wrote freelance articles for The Washington Post and The Associated Press while based in Los Alamos. Many of his articles centered on “The Manhattan Project” during the 1950’s. Returning to NYC, he worked for CBS News, writing and editing stories alongside Barbara Walters for Walter Cronkite. He later joined Bozell & Jacobs, a well-known advertising and public relations agency as a public relations account executive. In his later years, he enjoyed his life as a free-lance travel writer/photographer, writing for the Cornell Quarterly, Restaurant Hospitality, Travel Agent Magazine, Relax Magazine and other trade publications. It gave him the opportunity to visit more than 55 countries worldwide, from Argentina to New Zealand and nearly every state in the nation. Alvin is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 24 years, Muriel (nee Arkus), his loving daughters Susan and Regina and her spouse, Amy and his loving son Michael and his spouse, Timothy. He had two loving stepsons, Darryl and his spouse Elizabeth and Jordan and his spouse Linda. Alvin was blessed with 6 beloved grandchildren: Joshua, Isabel, Elijah, Hunter, Lena and Alexander. He was the brother to Lola (nee Glanzberg), brother-in-law to Lewis Lehrman of Scottsdale, AZ and the uncle to Matthew and Joann. The funeral will take place at the Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Wood Bridge Road, Katonah, NY on Tuesday, July 11 at 11 am. Interment will immediately follow the service at Mount Lebanon Cemetery on the Brooklyn-Queens border, 7800 Myrtle Avenue, Glendale, NY 11385. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Nature Conservancy at Nature.org or the Alzheimer’s Association at alz.org.
