I remember back in 2006, Stephen's daughter Leandra invited me to help move our friend Nick (and his cat) into student housing in Florida. It would be a 19 hour trip from New York to Florida so we set off at night to miss the traffic. We were making great time, but at around 1am we got a flat tire somewhere in New Jersey. The tow service fixed the flat, only to discover that the spare tire was flat too! We had to get towed all the way back to New York and didn't get home until sometime around dawn. We all crashed at Lea's house until the next afternoon. When we woke up, we discovered that Stephen (or "Mr. V" as we kids called him) had taken Lea's car to the garage and gotten it completely fixed up. Four new tires, new front ends, new brakes, the works. It must've cost a fortune but he refused to accept a dime from any of us. He only wanted us to be safe. That's just the kind of guy Mr. V was. Quiet, a bit gruff, but with deep love for his family and anyone they called a friend. He was a sweet, kind man who helped create sweet, kind children. He will be so missed.

My heart is breaking for the Vieira family. Such a beautiful obituary for a tough, but kind and generous man. Although I only knew Steve for a short period (a couple of years), he certainly left his mark on all who knew him.
