Obituary of Maureen V. Wetzel
Maureen V. Wetzel, a resident of Cross River, NY for the past 60 years, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the age of 91.
Maureen McNulty was born in White Plains, NY on July 6, 1933, to Thomas E. McNulty and Mary J. Peirano (May). She was raised in Hawthorne, NY and graduated from Pleasantville High School (Class of 1951). Maureen went on to secretarial school and started her career in Manhattan where she worked for Frank Stanton, the President of CBS Entertainment.
Maureen married the love of her life, Paul James Wetzel, on January 16, 1954. Four children soon followed. After many years as a stay-at-home mom, Maureen ventured back into the workforce. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Four Winds Hospital in Cross River, NY for several years. Eventually, Maureen became a realtor for the Houlihan-Lawrence Agency in Katonah, NY. She truly enjoyed helping people sell their home or find their new dream home. She had numerous repeat clients, and many long-lasting friendships were formed during this time.
Known by all as “Nana”, she loved having folks drop by the house for a visit. Often, the lucky visitor was treated to one of Maureen’s homemade cakes. Family members could always count on her to bake their favorite birthday cake.
Maureen and Paul’s preferred vacation destination was Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Trips to the Nauset Lighthouse and strolling through the shops and galleries of Chatham were always memorable. Rock Harbor in Orleans was a special spot for Maureen and Paul. They loved to watch the boats come and go and to view the spectacular sunsets.
One of Maureen’s greatest joys came from her family. She is survived by her four children: Michael (Roxanne), Cheryl (James), Beth, and Jeffrey (Alexandria), her four grandchildren: Michael Jr., Jonathan, David, and Emma; her four great-grandchildren: Michael Paul, Nicholas,Owen, and Amelia; and her sister, Michele Fraioli (George) from Brewster, NY.
Maureen is predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Paul, who passed away on December 6, 2019, at the age of 87. She is also predeceased by her brother, Brian McNulty who passed just a month earlier in Florida.
A Celebration of Life will be arranged to memorialize both Maureen “Nana” and Paul “Poppy” for all who loved them.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the South Salem Fire Department.
