Obituary of Joan Shirley Caldwell

Joan Shirley Johnston Caldwell, 87, of Louisburg NC died Tuesday, August 5th, 2025, at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham NC.

Joan was born on February 15, 1938, in Connecticut to the late Robert L. and Lois V. Offen Johnston. She grew up in the beautiful town of Pound Ridge, NY.

Joan graduated from Katonah High. She started her career as a telephone operator, then became a school bus driver for the Lewisboro school district, eventually spending many years driving in Charlotte County Fla. where she retired before moving to NC to be closer to family.

Her deepest passion was that of riding a horse. From spending time training horses, to show jumping and dressage, Joan’s favorite place was on the back of a horse. She loved them and they loved her in return.

Joan is the beloved wife of Garrettson and is the mother of Daniel Reynolds (Cheryl) of Spencer, Mass, Cherie Peede (Joe) of Elon, NC, Tina Parker (Edward) of Raleigh, NC, and Stepmother to Tom Caldwell (Mary) of Warren CT. She is the sister to Robert Johnston (Janette) of New Bern, NC and Donald Johnston (Jan) of Clayton NC, and is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her brother David Johnston.

Friends and Family may call at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Rd., Katonah, NY on Tuesday, August 12th from 9:00–10:30am.

Service will be celebrated at the Pound Ridge Community Church, 3 Pound Ridge Road, Pound Ridge NY on Tuesday August 12th at 11am. Interment will follow at the Pound Ridge Cemetery, Pound Ridge, NY.
