Molly, Gus, David and Bobby,
We are so sorry to hear of the loss of your incredible father, Robert. Our memories of our years in Bedford always include the thoroughly enjoyable times we spent together with the Ahrens. I can remember first meeting your mother and father, at West Patent Elementary School, and thinking, what a beautiful couple and family. After we got to know each other well over the years, I realized that their inner goodness exceeded their outward beauty. What wonderful, loving parents you had, and what wonderful children they raised. We love you and offer our deepest condolences for your loss.

Bob Ahrens was the first person I noticed on the Wall St. Cotton Exchange 50 years ago. Maybe because he was the only person my age, more likely it was the mere sight of him: a tall man perched on loose scaffolding, wearing a string of headphone wires. As a "Chalker," his job was to write every traded cotton price on a giant blackboard. After a few years, Bob began his career as a cotton trader, as pure a tape reader as ever existed. Given his exceptional read on human nature, understanding of the flow of orders and players in the game, Bob became a highly successful cotton trader.
Bob and Monica came from the same roots. Always delightful and openly warm. They were the first of my friends to get married, and we all knew the match was right. Bob was a devout husband and naturally became a great Dad as family was tops in their lives. "NYAK" (as he was called on the floor) had been a damn good basketball player, so he poured himself into coaching his kids.
Bob was a musician. He could play and sing punk guitar, bluegrass, and country. To him, Tony Bennett was a better singer than Sinatra. Country lyrics mattered and George Jones was a favorite. Music filled his life, leading Bob around with an easy grin and smiling eyes.
Bob wore many hats comfortably throughout his life. His friendship carried many of us into and out of life’s frays. Monica and I drove through a snowstorm to witness him rock CBGBs. He captained Winnebago weekends into the mountains for bluegrass festivals. Always thoughtful, he brought encouragement and love to so many relationships and situations. He became the President of the NY Cotton Exchange, and his opinion was sought by many committees and boards of fine institutions.
Bob picked up golf with his usual attention and intent, becoming a fine player. He shared his love for the game freely. If you played 18 with Bob, you could learn a thing or two and would most likely become his friend.
Bob was my dear friend. I will always be inspired by his charm, integrity, and character.
To his delightful family whom he loved dearly-please know we are saddened along with you. Your loss can never be filled.
Please try to remember you were the lucky ones.
Warmest regards,
Eli and Taylor

It’s hard to describe the impact that “BobbyandMonica” had on me as a teenager. As Thérèse’s best friend I got to spend a lot of time hanging around the Oswald house where M&R ebbed and flowed as they moved into their more adult lives and we were still stuck in our 1970s teen years. They both seemed exciting and beautiful and became nothing less than my idols. And my style icons. I was very lucky to be included in some very memorable times - like being allowed to crash in the Common Room of Robert’s Columbia dorm so T & I could stay out late at a concert in the city (T- was it Traffic?). And who else would have included 2 high school kids to see Muddy Waters on Bleecker Street? Robert Ahrens had so many obvious fine qualities - He may have had them all. I feel lucky to have known him even a little bit. My condolences to his family but what a beautiful legacy he’s left behind. I am so sorry for everyone’s great loss.

My condolences to Robert's wonderful family. I don't think of him as "Bob" because as the closest of neighbors and my best pal, growing up he was always Robert A, and I was Robert S. We did a lot of things together, from burning plastic toys (just to hear that cool zipppp sound when the molten plastic dropped on the ground) to being ham radio operators (he was WN2OLA), to him inviting me to join his band (Subyluke Lunkaby and the Jobolias Quumquats... a name he invented). We even both had Triumph TR-3's! He was a great friend, who introduced me to the Blues and Reggae. I'm very sorry that he is gone... he will be missed, for sure. He will be greatly missed by many who all have wonderful memories of the music, friendship and times shared. Too many shared over 50 years to mention here. He had a fabulous imagination and sense of humor, as well as great compassion. He was an inspiration.

Legend, hero….someone whose smile, laugh, “hello”, or “hey how are you doing” bred comfort and confidence to the addressee…..To a man I regarded at the highest of stature, who meant the world to me and whom made me a better person…, Bob you will be missed. A glass of Chardonay, (Chateau Montelena) and a fine cigar on the porch will be forever in my mind. Love, and thanks for all that you shared.

As a college freshman, in September of 1970, I was introduced to Rob at Columbia University. His girlfriend Monica invited me to come watch him play basketball at the College’s gym. That was my first experience entering a guys locker room and I can still smell the sweat that almost knocked me off my feet!!! I watched Rob play before ever being introduced to him and was equally impressed with his talent and good looks!
That was the beginning of our friendship.
Rob, through the eyes of Monica, was how I knew him best in those early days, but I soon came to enjoy his infectious smile, joyful laughter and his love for entertaining with his talented band.
Rob loved his wife and children so deeply and was hands-on as the kids grew and developed endless talents of their own. My own children were blessed with his patience to both listen and teach. He was beyond generous with his talents and treasures and time.
Thank you Rob, for all the love you shared!
I will miss smiling into your beautiful, golden eyes.

I had the pleasure of serving on the Winged Foot House Committee with Bob for several years and I always appreciated his ability to cut through the chatter, turn a heated discussion into something more rational and reach a reasonable conclusion. He was a quiet man but when he spoke we all listened. He wanted to give back to WF where he spent so many happy hours and he will be greatly missed by his many friends there and everywhere.
