I took classes with Stephen at SUNY. He was kind, intelligent, and insightful. I saw him about a month ago at a coffee shop- he was deep in his work, so I didn’t bother him. I wish I had said hello. He will be missed terribly by the people who knew him. My sympathies to his family and friends and coworkers.

This photo of Stephen with his brother Robert and my daughter Lillian is a small but treasured memory from years ago. It’s a reminder of the love and connection that will always be part of his story. Holding Jan and the entire family in my heart as we remember Stephen with love.
With love and sympathy,

Stephen was the closest person to a modern polymath and genius I knew. Blisteringly talented in the arts and verse; from piano to poetry--there was nothing he didn't love learning. There was no quenching his thirst for knowledge, and his curiosity shone like the first warm light of dawn on a shattered winter visage. His was a life filled with kinship, love, and making a difference around him for the better.
From the first time I met him in Arabic class in 2014 at SUNY Plattsburgh, I sensed he was different from all the rest. Although I was well versed in Arabic already, he challenged me to be better than I was at language studies, despite being new himself. From there on we spent every week chatting, or walking in Plattsburgh or Point Au Roche, for over 11 years, discussing philosophy, cooking, cat bellies, languages, and so much more. There was never a moment where I felt off or alone when I was with Stephen. He was a true friend, by every measure and standard. Not just to me, but to those who were privileged and fortunate enough to get to know him.
While I am heartbroken beyond repair to learn of his sudden passing, there is comfort in knowing that the courage, energy, wisdom, love, and compassion he entrusted in those around him, would be passed on to others. His memory is one of hope, and warmth.
If I had one regret it would be that I missed out on one last walk with my friend this summer. Let us walk together once more someday. I would love to tell you about the wonderful dishes you inspired, and the curiosities I encountered. See you again old friend. Rest peacefully.
Photographed is Stephen during one of our splendid walks at a place he loved most: Point Au Roche

We loved Stephen as a member of our family here in Plattsburgh. He is missed, in our hearts, and will never be far from our thoughts. You were a brilliant, shining star whose light was dimmed far too soon.
