I was a junior colleague of Stanislav Dukhin and met him in Russia and in the Netherlands where we shared an office at Wageningen University in 1994. After Stanislav immigrated to the United States, he and I had several discussions about colloidal hydrodynamics, a passion for both of us. Stanislav was a true pioneer in this field and, along with his colleague Boris Derjaguin he was the first to publish work on the phenomenon called “diffusiophoresis” and its close relative “diffusio-osmosis”. He had broad interests in colloid science and was remarkably skilled in analysis of colloidal transport. As his son Andrei has noted, he was fully committed to his work – it was a labor of love. Stanislav had to overcome many more barriers in his pursuit of research than those of us in the western democracies, yet he persevered through sheer determination. It was a true honor and privilege for me to have known Stanislav. He was a true giant in the field of colloid science and a very positive influence on my work.
