Kevin was a know-it-all wise-acre kid when I first knew him at Hoyt’s Garage. He was in high school. He would become the mechanic’s mechanic as they say in the business who, in my opinion, really did know it all. We spent many happy hours on the phone telling stories of ridiculous, seemingly unsolvable problems with all manner of people and devices from boilers to tractors. He was the consummate technician in heating, cooling, auto, truck, tractor, small engine, tools, parts sourcing, which includes physics and thermodynamics. All who knew him know what I mean.
I lost track of him in his racing years. I was restoring antique cars. But even then, I did manage to corral him into installing our new furnace and a few years later, piping our new oil tank. It was crazy knotty problems with anything mechanical where he really specialized and of course had the special tools I needed. I don’t know how many toolboxes he had in his shop.
When I called, my standard greeting was, “Hi there pal-o-mine, I need to borrow a…”. Conversely, his greeting was, “What do YOU want?” …or the classic, “If I had your money, I’d burn mine.” …or simply a condescending, “Yeeeeeeeeeeeees?” There will not be another quite like Kevin.
Years ago, I put together Fred Stingel’s snapshots for Jimmy O’Connor when he was running Hoyt’s Garage as Salem Auto. You’ll notice I mention Kevin as historian. Safe travels my friend, you are missed by many - Rob

Doc and I were heartbroken to find out about Kevin’s passing only today, 2 days after his service! So very sorry to hear this news knowing we had missed his wake. We will never forget Kevin’s friendship over the years and the countless times he helped us with mechanical repairs around the house including “pimping out” Doc’s lawn tractor into a snow plow, complete with Christmas lights!! Rest in peace dear friend.

I will never forget Kevin. He is one of my favorite people specifically because how he helped my family with necessary home maintenance - but always went above and beyond, kind, giving, so generous with his time. I trained my family to learn his name as an honor to him - I'd give them a pop-quiz - I'd ask, who lives there - until they knew the name Kevin Finney by heart. My Son told me Kevin Had passed. I will think of Kevin as one of my all-time favorites. I'm happy I got to thank him profusely for his kindness... Peace to Kevin, Leah and the family.

Thank you to the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital for their compassionate care of Kevin.
Thank you to Dr. Carreau, the oncologist who pulled every trick out of her bag to treat his very aggressive form of metastatic cancer. Thank you to Dr. Desai, Molly, Nancy, Val, Jenny, Zaria, Ewa, Sasha, Magda, Dr. Z from MSK, and everyone else involved in his care. From the valet attendants to the security guards, they all developed a sweet and encouraging relationship with Kevin. We’re thankful for the pet therapy dogs that visited him during treatment. He enjoyed discussions with the chaplains and being prayed over by many people, like Leah on 6 East (being slightly skeptical, but he thought he’d take all the help he could get).
A special thank you to the all-volunteer Vista Fire Department for their expeditious ambulance ride. You are all great!
And a very heartfelt thank you (not a big enough word) to all the friends who stopped by, picked up the slack at his home, hung out, held his hand, brought meals, walked Red, honked as they drove by, messaged him, or just called.
Kevin called it “The Long Goodbye.” He was deeply touched by the outpouring of love, humbled by the sight of fellow cancer patients, and mad as heck at his prognosis.
Always hopeful, he bravely battled cancer—beating the initial odds with dignity and grace—to the too-soon end.
With grateful appreciation from all of us,
Barbara, Leah, Ken (Jane), Ernie (Kim), Carolee (Will), Jack (Nicole), and the Finney & Sevcik families
