Just about twenty years ago, I got an email out of the blue, with the subject line “Looking for a Bike Buddy” from houndhugs@gmail.com. Debbie was new to Croton and wanted to explore Croton and northern Westchester. Deb had more days to ride than I, so I would only catch her on weekend rides, and only vicariously, enviously ride with her on her “Wednesday Wanderers” rides. I would peek at the WCC schedule and see that Deb was out on yet another glorious weekday 30-40-50+ miler! Over those years, she would explore and find wonderful routes and byways most of us didn’t have the time or curiosity to discover. She’d then post them as shareable rides (sharing the key word!). And she led countless rides. I treasured the times I could claim a Wednesday and ride with Deb, savoring the landscape, chatting, stopping for coffee always!
Deb stepped up to being President of WCC for many terms, leading and encouraging folks in countless ways! Safety for kids, Croton’s Bike Ped Committee, getting all of us into gravel!! Deb was a super-cycling advocate-radiant sprite-delight!! If Ginger Rodgers did everything Fred Astaire did backwards and in heels, Deb conquered hills and miles in red toenails, cycling sandals, and a smile! But I also know that this is how she approached life in general, be it as a friend, or a community, chorus, parish, or family member. Debbie encouraged me back on the bike after my own injuries and illness, inviting me on short rides or just coffee.
Debbie was grounded, generous, caring, and strong, I was blessed to know her. I know I will carry her with me.

Deb was a cherished friend and my Gravel Guru. She gave me the confidence to ride on gravel. I will always remember her words, “Trust your bike”. I so enjoyed Deb’s company on our early morning rides around the Croton reservoir and the Short and Dirty route. It was the best part of my week! I was well aware that she was going thru difficult times with her health but you would have never known because she never let it define her. She was positive and realistic, she had decided to continue living her best life. Her courage, friendships and kindness is what defined her. I am so thankful to have had her friendship. I will miss her tremendously.

If ever there was a person who was a true ambassador for bicyclists it was Debbie. From the way she would wave to extra
courteous motorists & those less so. She was a great ride leader in so many ways. She had an encyclopedic knowledge of most of the roads in North Westchester & Putnam too. She really enjoyed riding and knew her equipment too. I remember one specific time going uphill of course and she's riding by me & says look at that puny gear you have no wonder you're not going up faster & i got the cassette changed & it made a difference. She also didn't like for people to be dropped. especially on her rides. There were several occasions she saved my butt . Once i flatted with no pump & she almost cheerily waited & lent me hers while i changed the tube. Other times when riders lagged (me) she would ride with me and say no one should have io ride alone. She was generous to all the club members from the way she would have us over for refreshments on the halloween rides. She made riding fun, taught me how to ride the rolling hills. My sincerest condolences to her family.

Debbie really was the heart and soul of the Westchester Cycle Club. Her wonderful smile and positive attitude made every ride with her a joy. And Ohh how she loved flying down the hills! Debbie, I am so sorry that you suffered so much at the end but I'm sure now that you are "gonna go to the place that's the best. Goin' up to the spirit in the sky"

One of my fonder memories of Debbie was spontaneously running into her when I was cycling on the dirt Croton Dam Road. That happened several times in the early part of this decade, and we always had engaging conversations. May her memory be a blessing

I used to ride with the club many years ago, but time has not diminished my memory of Debbie. She was always so friendly and upbeat and when leading a ride always patient, which I so appreciated. The memory of Debbie that is most vivid to me was joining her ride for her 60th birthday celebration and inviting us all over to her house for refreshments. So gracious and hospitable to all. Thanks for being a wonderful ride leader and friend. I shall never forget you.

I am grateful to have known Debbie, such a fun-spirited, strong, and beautiful person. I will remember Debbie in her colorful outfits, always smiling, always cheerful. I especially enjoyed her Halloween rides. Her strength throughout her battle was nothing short of inspiring. She reminds us what resilience and courage look like. Sending you love, comfort, and peace during this incredibly difficult time. Love, Adriane

As a bike club ride leader, I often reflect on the joy and good friendships the bike club has given me. Debbie was a huge part of that joy that goes back to 2010 when I first joined the club. I always loved Debbie's rides, riding and spending time with with her. She always brought good cheer to the whatever she did! :-). For me, especially when I lead a ride, Debbie is my benchmark of what an inspirational leader and person should be. Knowing, riding and spending time with Debbie has made me a better ride leader, and hopefully, a better person.

Debbie once called me her biggest cheerleader. We trusted each other, on and off the bike.
For years, we began every single morning together chatting on Facebook. Before the day even started, we were already connected. We updated each other every few hours, sharing the ordinary details and the hard realities alike. When I went riding, I told her exactly where I was going, and I always called her when I made it back to my car. We shared everything.
I have never had a friendship like that before.
When Debbie was diagnosed, I immediately began researching — her diagnosis, the medications, the procedures — often before she did. I wanted to understand what she was facing so I could stand beside her in it. I learned what courage looks like.
She was brave.
She was grateful.
She chose positivity, even on the hardest days.
She faced something unimaginably difficult with strength and grace. She celebrated small wins. She showed up for me even while fighting for herself.
I will miss our morning messages. I will miss our constant updates. I will miss the comfort of knowing she was just a message away. But I will carry her bravery, her gratitude, and positivity with ne
I am forever grateful for the gift of her friendship.
