Obituary of Antonia Zappia
Antonia Zappia (nee Cuomo), 96, of Somers, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14, 2026.
Antonia was born on November 26, 1929, in Agerola (Naples), Italy, to parents Giuseppe and Assunta Cuomo. Born fourth of ten children, Antonia’s early life was defined by tireless devotion to her family. She tended diligently not only to her family’s farm but also to the needs of everyone in the household, particularly her younger siblings.
After building her life in Italy over almost four decades, she made the courageous decision to start a new life in America. In 1967, she joined her two sisters Anna and Elisa in Bronx, NY. It was there that she met her husband Mario Zappia, whom she married in 1968, and his daughter Rosemarie whom she accepted as her own. Antonia’s determination and unshakeable Catholic faith, which characterized her early life, endured and allowed her to establish a beautiful family, in which all her years of hard work were fulfilled. She passed down her devotion to God and the Blessed Mother to her daughter, grandsons, and generations to come.
Antonia’s maternal love extended far beyond her immediate family. She was a beloved sister, zia, cousin, and friend to many. She could always be found in the kitchen cooking something delicious. She will be remembered by all those who love her for her candor, her timeless wisdom, and her sharp wit.
Antonia is reunited in peace with her husband Mario. She is survived by her devoted daughter Susan and son-in-law Rino, her “daughter” Rosemarie, and her grandchildren: Vito and his wife Katherine, Antonio, and her great-grandson Declan.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, March 19 at St. Josephs RC Church, 95 Plum Brook Road, Somers, NY at 10:00 am
Entombment will follow in The Rosewood Mausoleum at Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale, NY
