I am sorry that I only just heard this news. I studied French with Mrs. Knowles at Mount Saint Vincent. She was a truly great teacher. I always admired her superb command of French and her intelligence and excellent teaching. She was a truly classy lady. My heart goes out to her family. Sincerely, Clare Higgins Class of 1972

My mother led a charmed life despite some difficulties along the way. But she had a large group of family, friends and colleagues that provided her with emotional and spiritual support especially in her final days. Many of these friends stopped by or sent messages to offer kind words and remembrances of my mother as we consigned her mortal remains to her grave. Her family is very grateful for this kindness and support during these trying times. At 98, my mother sometimes complained that “all” of her friends were dead or dying. It is obvious that she still had quite a few friends left.

My grandmother looked after me and my siblings when we were young, and we were able to reminisce about those memories up until the end. Her dedication to her faith, family, and friends near and abroad is inspiring. We will miss her very much. Attached is a picture of Kathleen with my daughter. She loved joining the “GG” or Great-Grandma club.

Deeply sorry to hear of Mrs. Knowles' passing, but was comforted to read of her long and diverse life, some of which I already knew. May her memory be a blessing. Dean Knowles was instrumental in my days as a student at the College of Mount St. Vincent. Though I did not have the grades to study abroad in Germany during junior year, she allowed me to do so, and also helped me find a program with the SUNY system that made it affordable. It was a pivotal experience that changed the trajectory of my life. I also valued her counsel when I returned to the Mount in senior year. She sensed the reverse culture-shock I was experiencing after a year exploring Europe, and she used to check in on me now and again to see how I was getting on. I enjoyed hearing the stories she shared about her own experiences as an early Fulbright recipient in Paris, studying at the Sorbonne, including having a young Jacqueline Bouvier in her class. And, I remembered her sharing her memories about travelling through war-ravaged Munich on her way to the Passion Play in Oberammergau. When I learned French years after graduating from the Mount, I often thought how nice it would have been to chat with Mrs. Knowles (though I had heard from others that her command of the language was "formidable", as the French would say, so I probably would have been too hesitant). When I spent some time living in Paris, I sometimes thought of her as a student there many years earlier. Though it has been decades since I was last in touch with Mrs. Knowles, I will always remember her professionalism, kindness and dry sense of humor that always came through. I came to admire her as a courageous and compassionate woman who, like many others at the Mount, made a vast difference in the lives of the students who passed through the College in that era. I had the pleasure and the honor of volunteering with Kathleen at Twigs, the Thrift Shop for Northwell Hospital in Mt Kisco. Her wit , knowledge of anything French and her faith, as well as her thoroughness in all she did always amazed me well into her nineties. Rest in peace dear Kathleen.
