Obituary of Dr. Sebastian A. Sora

Sebastian Antony Louis Sora, longtime resident of Somers, NY, passed away peacefully at home on July 6, 2026.

Sebastian was born on June 29, 1943, to Angelina and Joseph Sora and spent his childhood in Brooklyn, NY. From an early age, he was known within his large Italian Catholic family for his intelligence and curiosity.

Sebastian graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in Mathematics and Physics, received an M.B.A. from Iona College, and earned a doctorate in Computer Science from Pace University. He served in the U.S. Navy and worked for IBM for most of his career. He was also a tenured faculty member at several institutions of higher education, including Iona College and Montclair State, and finished his distinguished teaching career at Adelphi University.

Sebastian made his home in Somers, NY for more than six decades. He married Janet Dietz in 1967; she passed away in 1972. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Sora of Lawrence, Massachusetts; his children, Joseph Sora, Sebastian N. Sora, Frances Havard, and Jenny Sora; and his 11 grandchildren, Angelina, Sonny, Sebastian, Nicholas, Lillian, Evelyn, Oliver, Harry, Mary, William, and Sebastian.

Sebastian was a longtime parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Somers, NY. He will be remembered as a brilliant, curious, witty, and deeply loving man. He had an extraordinary memory and a way of holding onto the details of the lives of those he loved. For all his intellect and complexity, he found joy in the quiet things that filled a life with meaning: faith, family, books, science fiction, ice cream sodas, birds at the feeder, beloved dogs, long conversations, and the company of children. He was a source of wisdom, guidance, and steady counsel to those who knew and loved him.

His family will receive friends on Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah, NY, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 10, 2026 at St. Joseph’s RC Church, 95 Plum Brook Road, Somers, NY, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at St. John Cemetery, 80-01 Metropolitan Ave, Middle Village, NY 11379.
