Obituary of Joan Ann Caulfield

Joan Caulfield, 89, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026.

Born on August 26, 1936, Joan lived a life of enduring love for her family, deep faith, and quiet acts of generosity.

Joan was affectionately known as “the Greyhound Lady.” Whether strolling the streets of Belmont with her beloved greyhound Winnie or walking Joker through Lavallette, she became a familiar and welcome sight in her neighborhoods. Her love for retired racing greyhounds reflected her gentle heart and compassion for animals.

An avid reader and accomplished knitter, Joan rarely sat idle. Over the years she lovingly created hundreds of sweaters, afghans, and other knitted treasures, many of which continue to warm children, grandchildren, and other members of her large extended family. Her handiwork remains a tangible reminder of the care and love she poured into the lives of those around her.

Joan's Catholic faith was a steady source of strength throughout her life. She worshiped at Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church in Belmont, North Carolina, Padre Pio Parish in Lavallette, New Jersey, and most recently at St. Mark Catholic Church in Huntersville, North Carolina. She lived her faith quietly through her love, generosity, and care for others.

Joan was preceded in death by her husbands, Michael Fisher and Jack Caulfield, and by her beloved daughter, Eileen Miller.

She is survived by her brother, David Schoner and his wife, Terry; her children, Diane Fisher, Karen Mason, Maryellen Magee, and Michael Fisher; her six stepchildren; 24 grandchildren; and at least eight great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who were blessed by her warmth, kindness, and unwavering devotion to those she loved.

Joan's legacy is one of enduring love, gentle kindness, and steadfast devotion to family. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
