Johnny Van......it was always a highlight of the day when you shared a recent photo (you printed
back in the day) and told the story of your capturing the image. What patience this man had in pursuing his passion. I first met "big John" working as an intern and eventually Nick's assistent at the Trailside Museum, where John was a frequent visitor. And yes, there was the Fiddling Celebration which grew from a gathering at the Museun on July 4th, 1976 to the major festival it became running through 1996. John, and the Honey Hollow String Band, were "instrumental" in bring it all to fruition. I still have my copy of the album that was produced. Will miss the man and his spirit. Thanks for everything John.

Johnny,Van...like a caged wild bird finally free...a musician of a dancing spirit instrument...photographic capturer of wild things, feathered and not, with two legs or four-- practioner of animal magic--automatic trust, trusted, appreciated mentor-critic to wildlife artist wannabe, unassuming genius re animals(wild and domestic)..so,unique and different" in a naturally wonderful way...the world, certainly his friends, animal and human, have lost someone very, very special...the world is now a lesser place without him....he was unique.

My heart aches. I will really miss John. I know I will never meet another person like him. He was truly one of a kind.
May his spirit soar with all the bird and animal friends he loved to commune with.
They will be so happy to have him back.
He is now set free.

John taught me the love for chocolate donuts and ice cold milk! He taught me the love of music and forged indelible memories of guitar licks. He taught me the definition of gusto. He created for me the indelible impression of a life-loving individual driving a VW down life's highways. He taught me how to put 50 musicians in a 20x20 living room to free jam in his home after a folk concert he organized at Pound Ridge. He was a mentor and modeled for me the value and how to pursue authenticity. He pulled my dislocated finger into place with a sneaky, hardy yank. He melded in my soul the chorus of Wildwood Flower and Keep on the Sunny Side. I was lucky to know John and for me he was one of those people who becomes infused in your soul and his spirit lives on through me and others. Heaven's creatures are assembling for the Big Bear's Jamboree and I can only hope that our souls will meet again in Heaven's cross winds. Thank you John, for being you and for the endless gifts you gave to those you encountered.

I am saddened to hear about my buddy, Van's, passing yesterday.
Johnnie and I were like brothers growing up together, playing ball at Flint Park, hunting animals at Flint Park, and doing everything that children do growing up with each other. Our love and friendship was special and I'll miss him very much.
I wish I could be with you during this time. I am now living in Florida at 21350 Lancaster Run, #1416, Estero, Florida 33928, and travel is difficult.
God bless you all. My prayers are with you
