Obituary of Veronica D Joyce

JOYCE-Veronica D.

Veronica (“Vera”) D. Joyce, nee Fenty, died peacefully at home surrounded by her

children on October 1, 2019 in Somers, NY at age 89.

 Born in Bronx County, NY in 1930, Vera was the fifth child in a family that

lost their father a month before her birth so she was raised by her

mother.

After graduating from Cathedral HS (’48), Vera married her childhood

sweetheart, Bernard F. Joyce, in 1952. Vera cared for their growing family,

raising eight children in New Rochelle, NY  and Briarcliff Manor, NY, 

while Bernie worked and attended Fordham Law School at night. 

Always a strong proponent of the value and importance of education, Vera began

her college career part-time at Iona College  while raising her family.  She completed her BA at Pace University (’75)  and 

then went on to earn her Masters in Social Work from Fordham University (’79),

with all eight children cheering her achievements at Lincoln Center.

Vera enjoyed working as a Psychiatric Social Worker for Catholic

Charities and later developed a private practice.

Vera was a proud Board member of Boys Hope and Nativity Mission

Center and a member of several other charitable organizations.

Vera’s greatest joy was her family and she cherished the times spent with her children and 22 grandchildren in Spring Lake, NJ. 

Vera was predeceased by her husband of 62 years,

and is survived by her eight loving children and their spouses,

 Deborah Drake, Sharon (Gary Chichester),Veronica (Udo Topp),

Colleen (Joseph Hanczor), Brian, Deirdre (Jim Glascott), Sean

(Brita Forssberg) and Liam (Denise Martinez), 22 grandchildren and

1 great-granddaughter.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 6, 2019 from

3pm- 7pm at the Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road,

Katonah, NY 10536.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on

Monday, October 7, 2019 at 10am at The Church of the Magdalene,

525 Bedford Road, Sleepy Hollow, NY 10591.  Burial will follow at

Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 West Stevens Avenue, Hawthorne, NY

10532.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her

memory to the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Wilton, CT or a charity

of their choice.
