Obituary of Janet H. King
King, Janet H. of Somers NY passed away Thursday, December 26, 2019 at home, after a nearly two year battle with leukemia.
She was born Janet Elaine Heller on March 25, 1931 in Brooklyn NY to the late Carl and Florence Heller. She was Salutarian of her high school class in Lynbrook, NY in 1948, and graduated from Cornell University College of Human Ecology in 1952. She is a sister of Alpha Epsilon Phi and later earned a master’s degree from Columbia University. She was a professor at Marymount College in Tarrytown NY until her retirement in 1993.
Janet is the beloved partner of Martin Bernstein, devoted mother of David Schimmel (Patty Haynes) of Woodstock GA, Jonathan Schimmel of Roswell, GA, and step daughter Carrie King of Tampa, FL. She is the devoted grandmother of Jesse, Nathan, Noah, Michael and Rachel. She was preceded in death by her sister, Adele Weitzner, step mother Helen Heller, step daughter Kathy Simmons (Brent) and husbands Howard Schimmel and Paul A. King.
In retirement, she devoted most of her time to nature photography, becoming an accomplished amateur photographer, and a dedicated member of the Westchester Photographic Society. She was the light of our lives and beloved by all her family and friends.
Services will be held at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Rd., Katonah, NY on Sunday December 29, 2019. Gathering will be at 10:30 am, and the service will be held at 11:30 am.
