Jerry and Doris Karas were married on December 7, 1947. They eloped! NOT because there were any challengers to their nuptials (according to them), but because they didn't like their church's rules for the ceremony. That was the beginning of Jerry and Doris' adventures which lasted 72 years - most of which they continued to float tradition, but always did it together.

There are three words that come to mind when I think of papa, compassion, integrity and perseverance. He always showed great love and compassion for his family and friends. He was wonderful at building people up and wanted to know how everyone was doing! I have learned so much from him over the years and grateful for all the times we spent together. He will be forever loved and greatly missed❤️

So many fond memories of Papa, but a few that come to mind are the moments when his corky sense of humor would shine.
When we were very young, I remember Papa telling us that he learned to "meditate" in the Navy. And he quickly put his hands together above his head so that his middle fingers would stick out wiggling and began to "Ohm". We got a big kick out of it.
He used to pull his comb out quickly like it was a weapon and quickly comb his hair like nothing happened.
When we were teenagers, he would excuse himself from a conversation by saying we "wanted the old guy to go away." Yet that wasn't the case (usually :))
On the more serious note, I remember Papa's stories of the Navy and of teaching under privileged kids. Those stories of discipline, courage, and of helping people less fortunate are a legacy that lives in all of us as a result of his actions and dedication to teaching.
Most of all when I think of Papa, I think of his pride in his work and dedication to Nana, with her "honey to do list." He was so proud of the home that he, dad, and Uncle Keith built. He cleaned the gutters, mowed the lawn, and plowed the snow off the driveway for as long as he possibly could. That pride in everyday work is a very admirable thing. One that my father learned and tried to pass to me and my brothers (which sort of stuck!).
Papa will be dearly missed.

Papa. Somehow I feel I can only speak of Papa as one of three. Papa has always been the enduring, grand, respected and loved, paternal anchor in my and my brothers life. The faded and nearly indiscernible anchor tattoo on his forearm I think is a symbol of that. As little kids I remember him showing us this tattoo with a curious mix of pride and humility. Pride I think in the love, security, children and grand children that his life’s choices had brought him. Humility in knowing that we could never truly understand those choices as he had lived them just as we could never see that tattoo as it was on the day he got it nor feel the committed sting of the pen as he did. The steady passage of time and succession of generations fades and dilutes all lived experiences but they are not erased. We will miss him at our very core and think of him often. Papa lives on within each of us.

My most prominent memory of Pop Pop was his presence in a room. Usually recognizable by a neatly pressed shirt and firm handshake, he was a man of principle. Although we were never really able to relate in terms of our lifestyle or passions, he provided me a valuable role model of self-sufficiency and ingenuity. He will be dearly missed.

Here are some photos of Dad and Mom Christmas 2019. Dad loved Mallomars! Also, here's one of Charlie with Nanna and Pop pop (that photo is 22 years old!). This is when Dad learned that Charlie liked (I think he still does) to be held. More to come...
