Susan and I are deeply saddened to learn of Dick's passing and offer our sincere condolences to his wonderful family.
Dick and I were classmates at Notre Dame. He was a good friend, generous, thoughtful, and always willing to lend a hand. I will remember fondly our car trips back to NY from ND with his Dad at the wheel and "Eddie sleeping in the back seat". I always said "Dick Hodder was the smartest guy I ever knew" and yet, Dick was the kind of person who would never let you know it. Both in terms of intelligence and temperament, Dick was what he was destined to be - a great physician. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Dick was a Christian to the core, where simple kindness governed his path through life and his relations with others.

I first met Dick during my residency at St. Vincent's Hospital in NY. As I recall, he returned to St. Vincent's after his first tour of duty with the Army. Shortly thereafter, I was drafted into the Army and ended up spending most of my 30 year career in the Army in Preventive Medicine. It was a great and pleasant surprise when Dick returned to the Army. We unfortunately never had the chance to serve at the same locations while in uniform, but he was an invaluable asset to the Army PM community. His colleagues from the Army PM family have weighed in with expressions of condolences via an email network. To his family, I would like to ask that you accept my own condolences for the loss of a wonderful person, husband, father, physician, and colleague who undoubtedly had a lasting positive impact on those who knew him best. Sincerely, Francis L. O'Donnell, MD, MPH, COL (Ret), USA, Silver Spring, MD

Dear Nancy, Rick, Chris, Bonnie & Danny,
I am so sorry to hear of your Dad’s (husband’s) passing. Richie (as I always called him) was my older cousin by 11 years (give or take 2 months) and he was awe inspiring to me growing up! He was so intelligent, so accomplished and when we were kids, even though he never made me feel that way, I was probably pretty annoying to him! He was very comforting to my family when my brother died and when I lived in Virginia, we got to spend some time together which was awesome. He was kind and thoughtful and even though I will not be able to attend the services next week, my thoughts and prayers are with each of you during this difficult time. Love, Ann Galbraith
