Obituary of Kay E. Hannigan

Kay E. Hannigan (Kay, Katie), 85, of North Salem, NY died peacefully in her sleep on April 8, 2023 at Northern Westchester Hospital.

Kay was born on June 20, 1937 in Yonkers, NY to the late Harold and Evelyn Torstenson. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1955 and then attended the Katherine Gibbs School in NY. After working at General Foods Corporation for six years, Kay left to care for her family and dedicate her time to being a full-time Girl Scout leader, family cheerleader, and mom extraordinaire.

In 1981, Kay returned to work and served as the Town of North Salem’s Court Clerk for 25 years. Many brought before the Court said her stare was more dreaded than any possible sentence or fine.

Kay was the beloved wife to Peter and they would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September.  She is also survived by her loving children, Greg (Bobbi) of Brewster, NY, and Kim Van Orman (Jeff Mook) of Katonah, NY. She was the devoted grandmother to Ryan (Jaimie) of Brewster, NY; Justin and Madison of Brewster, NY; Conor Mook (Brady) of Brooklyn, NY; Ian Mook of Hastings, NY; Tyler and Cadey Mook of Katonah, NY; and one great grandson, Christopher Hannigan. Kay is also survived by her brother, Guy Torstenson of Westport, CT and many nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and -nephews.

Friends may call at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah, NY from 3pm to 7pm on Monday, April 10th.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 95 Plum Brook Road, Somers, NY at 10:00am on Tuesday, April 11th. A private burial will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, NY.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution to Friends of Karen (118 Titicus Road, North Salem, NY 10560), a 501(c)(3) charity that has provided assistance to more than 17,000 families with children battling life-threatening diseases. Kay’s close friend, Sheila Petersen, founded Friends of Karen and, in the mid-1970s, Kay was one of its first volunteers.
