Our Mother has taught us the power of faith and prayer which never faltered whenever there was doubt, disappointment or uncertainties in her life. She instilled in us love for each other which should never waiver, for family love is supreme over all other endeavors.
Grandma is no words: She is a feeling, the feeling of comfort and the feeling of home. Grandma will always be remembered for her unquestioning and unyielding faith.
Grandma was a tough and honest woman with a sharp mind, quick wit and the need to put others before herself. Grandma always had the remedy for whatever ailed you; whether it be a cookie to satiate, an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on.
“God only gives you what you can handle”. So with that in mind, Grandma had to be one of the strongest women in the world.
Grandma was filled with love and fiercely protective of her family. She made the best cakes and made sure you got five crispies on your birthday.
Grandma nurtured and prepared her grandchildren for life’s many challenges by stressing the importance of moral and values. Be at peace Grandma, you have prepared all of us for a life of love and respect for others. You are loved.

He was a faithful fan at their sporting events and musical concerts! Three dear sisters, Doris Van Sickle of Randolph, Wilma Bridges of Salamanca, and Patricia Hartman of Little Valley also survive, as well as many nieces and nephews who were special to him. Dr. Easton was pre-deceased by his infant daughter Elizabeth Anne, his parents Cleon and Emma Frenz Easton, brother Richard Easton, and sisters Marie Winship, Esther Crandall, and Phyllis Weaver.
Dr. Easton (or “Slim” or “Doc” as he was known by many) was born in the Bucktooth area of Salamanca on November 19, 1925. His mother died when he was just two years old; he lived with his aunt and uncle in Steamburg and, at the age of 6, went to live in several different homes in Little Valley. He worked hard on local farms doing chores, developing his love of farm animals and appreciation for small farmers, and then found a real home with the Charles Carr family, working in the family’s dairy. Dr. Easton was appreciative of all of the homes he lived in, and he felt fortunate for all of the opportunities afforded him. Upon graduating from Little Valley High School in 1943, he went to Union College as part of the Navy’s V-12 program. He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, including one year in the Pacific Theatre. He was discharged with the Rank of Ensign. Dr. Easton then returned to Union College for 3 years and graduated from Cornell University in 1951 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. He practiced in Machias with Dr. Nicholas Paddock from 1951 to 1954; in 1959, he formed a partnership with Dr. Donald Lein and then, in 1967, founded the Machias Veterinary Service with his dear friend and colleague, Dr. Melvin Pollock. He cared for countless animals, large and small, during his years in Machias and developed relationships with their owners as well. He particularly loved doing farm
calls at many of the small farms in the Machias area. After his retirement from the veterinary practice, he continued his professional work for the NYS Racing and Wagering Board from 1977-83 as track veterinarian. He and his wife moved to a small farm in Delevan where he could raise some of the animals he had spent a lifetime caring for. Friends and neighbors appreciated the eggs and maple syrup that he provided.
Community service was of great importance to Dr. Easton. As Supervisor of the Town of Machias, from 1964-1968, he created the Town Park on Union Street, established the Youth Commission, and was instrumental in obtaining a grant for the installation of the Town Swimming Pool as well as in the formation of the Machias Water District. He was elected to the Cattaraugus County Legislature in 1968 and served there until 1974. He enjoyed being a member of the advisory board of the Delevan branch of Citizens Central (now M & T) Bank from 1963-1987, and he served as Chairman of the Civil Service Commission of Cattaraugus County from 1977-1996. With his wife, he delivered Meals on Wheels for 25 years and, until recently, was active in his church, Delevan United Methodist. A member of the Glen A. Lewis, Hobart D., formerly of Bedford, NY died on April 1, 2011. He was 101 years old.
Mr. Lewis graduated from Mercersburg Academy and Princeton University. In 1942 he began a long career working for Lila and Dewitt Wallace, founders of the Reader’s Digest. He was an executive editor for 22 years and in 1961 he became vice president of the Digest. When the Wallaces retired in 1965, they handed the reins over to Hobart Lewis.
An article in Time Magazine dated 01/01/65 stated:
“Hobe Lewis was both the predicted and the predictable choice. When he came to the Digest in 1942, his only experience was in advertising; everything he learned about journalism he learned from the Wallaces. Lewis proved a good student and rose rapidly on the masthead. He had a thorough working knowledge of the business side of publishing, but he also became, say his colleagues, one of the best story editors in the business.
Lewis traveled with Richard Nixon’s 1960 presidential campaign as the Wallaces’ deputy, and in 1962 they began shifting some of their administrative burdens to him. He retired from the Reader’s Digest in 1976.

He is survived by his loving family: Paul Lewis and his wife Jean, Linda Lewis Donn and her husband Dr. Anthony Donn and Timothy Lewis and his partner Richard McKeon. Wielawski, Leonarda (Jackiewicz) who survived a German labor camp in World War II, found her way to America and learned English partly by watching movies at the Bedford Playhouse, died on March 13 at Northern Westchester Hospital. She was 90.
Mrs. Wielawski, known to friends as Lee, worked as a real estate agent for several local companies after her husband died in 1968. Before that, she was a homemaker, raising three children and holding leadership roles in volunteer organizations, including the Fox Lane High School PTA, the League of Women Voters and the Northern Westchester Mental Health Association. She was also a Slavic languages scholar who earned two masters degrees from Columbia University.
Born in rural eastern Poland to parents who bred horses for the Polish cavalry, Mrs. Wielawski was snatched from the streets of her home town at age 22 by German soldiers and transported to a forced-labor camp, never to see her family again. Half a century later, she received formal reparations from the German government and the official designation of Holocaust survivor.
She met her future husband, psychiatrist Joseph L. Wielawski, after the war at a United Nations refugee camp in Germany, where she was a teacher in a makeshift school for war orphans and he was part of the international team of psychiatrists charged with evaluating the competence of accused war criminals to stand trial at Nuremberg. When they fell in love, Dr. Wielawski had silver spoons melted into wedding rings.
They emigrated to the United States, arriving with millions of other newcomers at Ellis Island. Their first home in America was in an apartment over the Bedford Playhouse in Bedford Village. Mrs. Wielawski learned English from the movies of the 1940s, making a deal with the landlord that for the price of one ticket she could see a movie as many times as she liked. Thus in her spoken English and bearing were whiffs of Bacall, Hepburn and Stanwyck.
In 1955, the couple built a house on Roosevelt Drive in Bedford Hills, where Dr. Wielawski had a medical office as well as one in New York City, and also served as a psychiatric consultant to the former Hillcrest Center for Children, now Kasho on Harris Road.
Mrs. Wielawski’s wish to remain in her home – a symbol of the life she and her husband rebuilt after the devastation of World War II – was sustained by her family, friends, and neighbors. Many knew her as an avid gardener and lover of the outdoors who could be seen trimming shrubs, mowing the lawn, and undertaking new gardening projects to the very end of her life.
Mrs. Wielawski is survived by her children, Edward J. Wielawski of Boston, Irene Wielawski Mulligan of Pound Ridge and Andrew R. Wielawski of Seravezza, Italy; four grandchildren, Emily Mulligan of Boston, Andrew Mulligan of Brooklyn, Leon Wielawski and Sophia Wielawski, both of Seravezza, Italy; a son-in-law, Thomas Mulligan of Pound Ridge, and a daughter-in-law, Irena (Przybylo) Wielawska of Seravezza, Italy.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church in Bedford Village at 10 AM on Friday, March 18. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Women’s Civic Club of Katonah, 71 Bedford Road, Katonah, NY, 10536, where Mrs. Wielawski was a member and thrift shop volunteer for many years
