Obituary of William K. Dwyer, Sr.

William Kieran Dwyer (Bill), 84 of Somers, died Sunday June 16, 2024 at Waterview Hills Rehabilitation Facility in Purdys, NY, roughly 40 miles north of his childhood roots in the Inwood section of Manhattan NYC. Bill died peacefully overnight after several days of being surrounded by loved ones, just 7 months after the passing of beloved wife and partner of 60+ years, Viola.

Beloved husband of Viola V. Dwyer (Vi Vaughn).  Much loved father of Christa Dwyer Ryan and William Dwyer Jr. Cherished father-in-law to Maddie Dwyer and Timothy Ryan.  Blessed grandfather to Gabriella, Mackenzie, Sofie, Teagan and Kieran.

Bill was born June 14, 1940 in New York, NY.  Raised in Manhattan (Inwood), the youngest of three to classic Irish immigrants Catherine (Kathleen/Kay) and William (also Bill). Irish-Catholic family and heritage was central to his upbringing; his closest friends/neighbors were his first cousins (Coughlin) in the same apartment building. Bill and his sisters Patricia (Patsy/Mary) and Ann attended Good Shepherd grammar school in Inwood. He continued to Cardinal Hayes High School in the Bronx (graduated at 16) and then Pace College (Univ.) in Manhattan, where he earned the Bachelor’s in Accounting which drove his professional career.

After marrying fellow Inwood-ite Vi, they settled in Oceanside NY and raised two children, Bill Jr and Christa. Their passions were parenthood, followed closely by neighbors, friendships, and the local beaches. They also took a special/active interest in local youth soccer, particularly the rise of girls soccer in Oceanside.

Bill’s professional career focused in the financial aspects of publishing. His roles grew to ‘controller and above’ at such publications as New York Magazine and the Village Voice, where he eventually retired as COO after 20+ years of service.

Later Bill and Vi became avid golfers, joining Hempstead Golf & Country Club in West Hempstead, NY. Eventually they built and retired to their dream home on the 14th green at Taberna Country Club in New Bern, NC.

All inevitably gave way to their beloved grandchildren, all of whom they felt blessed to know well.

Husband-father-grandfather-hood proudly aside, Bill’s greatest role was that of provider. He played such for his own and others, whenever needed. This legacy lives on in periodic reminders from friends and acquaintances alike.

He will be missed and always loved.

The family will receive friends on June 28th from 11:00am - 1:00pm at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah, NY.
