Obituary of Marjorie Jane McGahren

Marjorie Jane McGahren, a beloved resident of Naples, Florida, passed away on August 24, 2024, at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City after a brief battle with cancer. Born on May 21, 1938, in Queens, New York, to the late Charles Daniel Mulvehill and Margaret Kealy Mulvehill, Marjorie lived a life filled with dedication, talent, and an unwavering love for her family, community, and faith.

After earning an associate degree from Marymount College in 1958, Marjorie began her career as a secretary for the United States Marine Corps at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii where she lived with her first husband Lawrence M Waterhouse Jr. She later worked as a bookkeeper for Waterhouse Securities, Inc., at 44 Wall Street in New York City. While her professional accomplishments were notable, Marjorie found her true calling as a homemaker, raising her five children—two daughters and identical triplet sons—with love and devotion.

Marjorie’s life was enriched by her artistic talents. She was a skilled seamstress, a passionate artist, and a dedicated gardener. Her love for nature extended to judging floral competitions in Litchfield CT for several years. She was an avid reader who cherished the Florida sunsets and long walks on the beach. Above all, Marjorie was a dedicated servant of God. As a devoted Catholic, she found peace, friendship and fulfillment in attending Mass and participating in Bible study groups in Naples, Florida.

Predeceased by her beloved husband, Richard McGahren, in 2015, Marjorie leaves behind a legacy of love through her children: Christine (Kyle) Groff of Waccabuc, NY; Jennifer (Perry) Waterhouse Cooper of Katonah, NY; Lawrence (Jennifer) Waterhouse of Chappaqua, NY; Kevin (Angela) Waterhouse of Scarsdale, NY; and Patrick (Lindsay) Waterhouse of Scarborough, NY. Marjorie is also survived by her three sisters and one brother: Ann Redican of New London, NH; MaryEllen Ripley of New London, NH; Kevin Mulvehill of Wilmington, NC; and Jane Kirk of New London, NH. She was a devoted grandmother to twenty grandchildren and a great-grandmother to two.

Marjorie’s life was a testament to faith, love, creativity, and family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Joseph Church, 95 Plum Brook Rd, Somers, NY 10589 at 11:30 am on Thursday, August 29th. A private burial will follow the Mass.
