Obituary of H. Stanley Johnson

Herbert Stanley (Stan) Johnson passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, November 29, 2024, at the age of 98. Born in Low Fell, Gateshead, England, Stan immigrated to the United States at the age of 9 with his sister Joan and their parents, George Herbert and Edith (Hutchinson) Johnson.

In high school, Stan was an active member of the aeronautical club. After graduating, he briefly worked as an office boy at a Manhattan law firm. In 1944, he volunteered for the Royal Air Force and was sent to Canada for training, where he trained as a radio operator on a bomber. After the war, Stan worked as a Steward for Eastern Airlines and as a bank teller.

When his family moved to Pleasantville, New York, Stan took a position at Chas. H. Sells, a land surveying and engineering firm. He eventually became a licensed land surveyor. In 1978, he opened H. Stanley Johnson, Land Surveyors, in Mt. Kisco, New York, and successfully ran the firm with his two sons, Robert and Stephen, until his retirement to Cape Cod in 1994.

It was in Pleasantville that Stan met the girl next door, Margaret (Peg) Finnerty, who would become his loving wife of 62 years. Peg predeceased Stan in 2011.

Stan was an avid tennis player, nature and landscape photographer, and world traveler. His photographs were published in Vermont Life magazine and other publications. Some of his work even appeared on placemats at local diners and in jigsaw puzzles.

After Peg’s passing, Stan met and married his second wife, Nancy Rust, who predeceased him in 2023.

Stan is survived by his four children, Robert Johnson (Linda), Susan Naspo (Eugene), Stephen Johnson (Virginia), and Mary Blanchette (David).  Nine grandchildren, Jason, Patrick, Colin, Alex, Timothy, Genevieve, Stephen, Sophie, and Ruby.  Two great grandchildren Emmett and Vera.

A memorial gathering will take place at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah, NY 10536 on Thursday, December 12, 2024, 4 – 7 pm
