Frank was more than a headmaster; he was a guiding light for my family. I’ll never forget the time he pulled me aside after a school event to share a thoughtful observation about my children. He saw their unique strengths in a way that felt almost magical—recognizing their creativity and kindness long before it became evident to others. His words stayed with me and became a touchstone for how I encouraged them to grow. Frank’s ability to see the unseen and nurture it with such care made him an extraordinary educator and human being. He truly enriched our lives in ways we’ll always treasure.

Frank changed my entire family's lives, first as the boss of my Brother and my late Sister-In-Law (Micahel & Annies Roberts) and then, following my Sister-In-Laws's passing, arranged for my two sons to attend BWL on scholarship in Annie's memory. His generosity and compassion to the Roberts family affected us profoundly and changed our lives in so many ways. Frank was a legend and will forever stay in our hearts. A great man who changed thousands of lives, and his legacy will live on for decades.

I first met Frank in 1992, during the merger that created Birch Wathen Lenox School. At the time, I was new to the city, having just moved from Long Island, with two small children who needed a place to grow and learn.
My search for a school had been disheartening—each visit to other private schools left me feeling rejected, as if my children weren’t truly wanted there. Then, I met Frank, and everything changed.
From the moment we met, his warm smile put me at ease. It was infectious and sincere, and his welcoming demeanor made me feel seen and valued—not just as a parent, but as a person. Frank’s genuine care reassured me that my children were just as important to him as they were to me. Without hesitation, I knew that Birch Wathen Lenox was the right choice for my family.
Over the past 30 years, six of my children attended Birch Wathen Lenox, and now my grandson, who is in 11th grade, continues the tradition. Not a single year has passed since 1992 without a member of my family walking the halls of the school—a testament to the incredible foundation it provided, largely thanks to Frank’s influence.
Frank and I often joked about how many years we’d spent together at the school. He used to tease me about being the school’s unofficial spokesperson, as I could never stop singing its praises. Birch Wathen Lenox meant so much to me and my family, shaping the futures of each of my children.
Frank was the kindest, most sincere, and joyful person I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. He greeted life with a sharp wit, a warm heart, and an undeniable sense of purpose. I will always be grateful that it was him who welcomed me all those years ago, at a time when I felt lost and uncertain.
Frank’s impact was immeasurable, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace, and may we find comfort in knowing how deeply he was loved and admired.

Mary, Andrew and Sarah,
Frankie and I shared so many wonderful memories together. From his early childhood you could see he was a very special person excelling in school, caring for others and always looking forward to family gatherings. We always made each other laugh over silly things. As years passed his family became increasingly important making sure they were safe and got good educations. It goes without saying that he achieved his goals.
This quote seemed appropriate “Though nothing can bring back the hour of splendor in the grass, glory in the flower, we will grieve not; rather find strength in what remains behind”.
I love you Frankie… Rest in Peace,
Aunt Esther (and Bill)

Kind and thoughtful are the first descriptors that come to mind as I remember Frank. I always enjoyed our conversations. Frank was an accomplished listener. Caring and helpful are another set of qualities I connect with Frank. He cared about his communities, his family, and his neighbors and he helped as he could. He extended his hand when it mattered most. And, it mattered. He touched thousands of lives. He certainly touched mine and my family’s. Frank’s memory is definitely a blessing and I am only one of many who will find themselves nodding and smiling when he comes to share a cup of coffee in our minds. Thank you, Frank.
Best,
Todd Griesman

I was so sorry to learn of the passing of Frank who I knew for more than 30 years. I was the Chairman of the Board of Birch Wathen Lenox for most of the time that Frank was the Headmaster of BWL. We were fortunate to have been able to attract Frank to head Birch who did a wonderful job in providing leadership for the successful merger of Birch Wathen and the Lenox School. His leadership created a top K-12 co-ed private school in Manhattan. I and thousands of others, including students, parents, faculty and the community, benefitted.
My heartfelt condolences to Mary and, the entire Carnabuci family. It is sad that both Frank and my wife Susan both passed away within a few days of each other.
