Obituary of John Whalen
John Daniel Whalen, 89, a resident of Katonah for 52 years and US Army Veteran passed away peacefully on October 23rd. John, or as most knew him “Jack” was born on August 11, 1935 in New York, New York to the late James and Hilda Whalen. He graduated from Pratt Institute where he pursued his love of architecture. He used his love of architecture to bring the “swoops and arches” in his brain to life for many in the New York City area and more recently Westchester County. Additionally, one of his recent passions was volunteering at “Take It Or Leave It Shed” (TIOLI) in Bedford where he enjoyed conversations with locals and finding the hidden treasures.
Making memories with family and friends was what Jack cherished most. Jack easily made conversation with anyone nearby, even those who were lucky enough to sit by him on the train traveling. He never met a stranger and was a great story teller! He was a lover of music, especially jazz, Fleetwood Mac, or songs that made him tap to the beat. He always had a pen in his hand and was sketching whatever captured his eyes attention. Always hungry for additional information Jack believed learning and working kept his mind sharp. Most recently, he loved being involved in each of his grandchildren’s lives as they pursued their dreams.
John was predeceased by his loving wife, Sally Whalen and his beloved son Jeff Whalen. John is survived by his daughter Heather Reid, North Carolina, daughter-in-law, Erica Whalen of Yorktown, New York, his grandchildren Sean, Jayden, Brianna, Jack-Henry, and George. John leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends of whose lives he impacted greatly.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church 31 Bedford Rd, Katonah, NY on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 12noon. For those who can not attend this service will also be streamed.
