Obituary of John K. McQuade
John Kevin McQuade of Katonah, N.Y. died on Saturday, January 4, 2025 peacefully at his home in Somers, N.Y. He was 83 years old, and was a 30 year resident of Katonah, New York. Born in Queens, N.Y. on October 18, 1941 to Rose K. (McEneaney) McQuade and Joseph R. McQuade of Queens, N.Y. John is a proud graduate of St. Kevin’s Grammar School in Flushing, N.Y. and Power Memorial Academy of Manhattan, N.Y. in 1959. He graduated from St. John’s University, New York, N.Y. in 1963 and earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) License in the State of New York in 1968. He served in the Army National Guard of New York from 1963 until receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1968.
He worked as an Accountant (CPA), Chief Financial Officer (CFO), and as a Financial Consultant at numerous companies in the Tristate area commuting into Manhattan, Westchester County and Connecticut.
Upon retiring in 2008, John read of the financial crisis and the many layoffs, resulting in local families going into foreclosure on their houses. He volunteered and devoted his time for 10 years to the New York Housing Action Council as a Home Preservation Counselor to help families prevent against foreclosure on their homes during the financial/mortgage crisis. He received a Social Advocacy Award for 10 years of service from Volunteer New York! in 2019. Helping clients to qualify for a loan modification and remain in their homes provided him with much joy and satisfaction.
John was married to Louise Kalinowski McQuade in 1969 and made their home in North Salem, N.Y. for 18 years, before moving to Katonah in 1989. John and Louise were married for 42 years, until Louise’s passing in 2011. Thereafter, John was fortunate to meet and develop a close relationship with his beloved friend Edwina “LuLu” Milano. Following her untimely death, John moved to Heritage Hills in Somers, N.Y. in 2020.
John is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Raymond McQuade and James McQuade, and wife Louise K. McQuade. John is survived and will be enormously missed by his loving children, Dr. Jennifer (Timothy) McQuade, Dr. Gary (Catherine) Hayes, Douglas Hayes, and Cynthia Sheffield. In addition, he was blessed with nine grandchildren: Kevin, Austin, Olivia, Michael, Jonathan, Matthew, Kimberly, Isabelle, and Alexander, and one great grandchild, Abigail.
He was an avid sports fan routing for his NY Mets, Rangers and St. John’s Basketball as well as mourning the betrayal of the Brooklyn Dodgers when they left NY. He also enjoyed traveling throughout the world to Europe, China and Russia. He followed the financial markets and business world closely and enjoyed sharing his investment knowledge with family and friends.
He was a man of faith and was proud of his Catholic upbringing and education. Marching in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in NYC with his Power Memorial High School classmates was an annual highlight.
John will be remembered for his sharp wit, quick smile, devotion to family, love of country and everything New York.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 12, 2025 from 2-6 pm at Clark Associates Funeral Home in Katonah, N.Y.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Somers, N.Y. on Monday, January 13, 2025 at 10am.
