Obituary of Sara Ann Whelan

Whelan, Sara Ann “Sally” Johnson.

 

A longtime resident of Greenwich, Sally was born on June 11, 1939 to Catherine Curley Johnson and Frederick Conrad Johnson in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated with honors from the convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich in 1957 and attended Manhattanville College.

 

In her youth, Sally was a volunteer in the hospitality shop at the Greenwich Hospital and a Junior Volunteer with the American Red Cross. She was a member of the Greenwich Junior Women’s Club, a Cub Scout’s Den Mother and volunteered as a teacher’s aide at the Riverside School. More recently she was a volunteer at Meals-on-Wheels and Neighbor-to-Neighbor. She enjoyed books, decorating, being with her family, laughing, chocolate, and roses.

 

During the 1980’s and 1990’s, Sally was associated with JAI Press, Inc. of Greenwich where she oversaw the production of hundreds of scientific volumes from manuscript to bound book.

 

Sally is survived by her two sons: Rick (Mary Jo) Whelan of Cos Cob, Andrew Whelan and his partner Renwick Knight, both of Greenwich, and two grandchildren, J and Chase Whelan.

 

Funeral Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Convent of the Sacred Heart, 1177 King St, Greenwich, Connecticut.
