Obituary of Sally Whalen

Sally Lynn Whalen, 79, a resident of Katonah for 46 years passed away peacefully on August 13th after a long but courageous battle with cancer.  Sally was born on September 5, 1938 in Buffalo, New York to the late Charles and Dorothy Cook.  She graduated from Syracuse University in 1960 where she pursued her dream of being a teacher.  She was a passionate elementary school teacher for over 35 years primarily in the Katonah-Lewisboro School District.

Making memories with family and friends was what Sally cherished most.  Those who knew Sally best will remember her ability to entertain, create and send unique pop-up cards for every holiday, and create lasting family traditions.  Most recently, she loved watching her grandchildren grow up.

Sally was predeceased by her son Jeff Whalen, and survived by her loving husband John “Jack” Whalen, her daughter, Heather Whalen of Raleigh, North Carolina, daughter-in-law, Erica Whalen of Yorktown, New York, her grandchildren Jack-Henry, George, Sean, Jayden, and her sisters Brenda Rounds of Hilton Head, South Carolina and Louise Sweitzer of Easton, Pennsylvania. Sally leaves behind numerous loving relatives and friends of whom she touched deeply.

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church 31 Bedford Rd, Katonah NY on Saturday, September 8th at 4:30PM.  In lieu of flowers, Sally requested that contributions be made to the Katonah Presbyterian Church Hand Bell Choir Fund or the KPC, Deacons Fund.  Please make checks payable to KPC with Handbell Fund or Deacon Fund in memory of Sally Whalen as the memo line.
