Obituary of Sylvia DiScala

Sylvia DiScala, of Thornwood, NY, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2019, at the age of 78. She was surrounded by the love of her family and friends.

She was born in Newark, NJ on December 18, 1940 and was raised by the late Maddalena and Nicola Mazzella in the Bronx, NY. Sylvia graduated from Walton High School in 1957.

Sylvia met and married Giuseppe (Peppino) DiScala in Isola di Ponza, Italy in November 1961. They lived in the Bronx, and with the help of their beloved uncles Ferdinando and Antonio, opened Concourse Italian Restaurant. In 1976, they moved their family to Thornwood, NY and have enjoyed 43 wonderful years in their cherished home. In 1991, Sylvia and Peppino opened Peppino’s Ristorante in Katonah, NY. It is at Peppino’s, with the wonderful staff and customers, Sylvia enjoyed many wonderful memories.

Sylvia’s greatest joy in life was her six grandchildren, who affectionately know her as Nonna. She loved nothing more than spending quality time with each of them and finding ways to make each one feel special and loved. But her friends will tell you she did not only do this for her grandchildren, she managed to do this for everyone. She will be missed by her dear friends who always felt welcomed in her home. They shared much laughter while sipping coffee and tasting a freshly made dessert she had just baked. Her welcoming smile and positive attitude will surely be missed by all.

Sylvia had many talents and was often seen with her knitting needles creating new outfits for her grandchildren, blankets for her children or hats for newborns at Northern Westchester Hospital. Her talents were truly limitless.

Sylvia is survived by her loving husband, Peppino, her brother Gennaro Mazzella (Patricia) of Lebanon, NJ, her three children: Joseph (Dina), of Katonah, NY; Marisa Farrell (Don), of Thornwood, NY; and Nicole Ponte (George), of Chappaqua, NY. She is also survived by the loves of her life, her six grandchildren: Cassandra, Nicholas, Joseph, Julianna, Giada and Gioia and many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her four siblings, John Mazzella, Frank Mazzella, Madeline Reed and Millie Cignarella.

Visitation will be held at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Rd, Katonah, NY 10536 on Friday, September 13th from 4-8pm. The Mass will be held on Saturday, Septmber 14th at 10am at Saint Mary of the Assumption RC Church, 55 Valley Road, Katonah, NY 10536.
