Obituary of Judith M. Katz

Katz, Judith Maxen., 84, of North Salem, NY, passed away peacefully in her home on July 9, 2020.

Judith was born in New Britain, CT, November 20, 1935 to Louis and Vivian Maxen.

Judy graduated from Boston University with a degree in Journalism in 1956. She married Robert “Bob” Katz on March 1, 1957. Judy and Bob first lived in Riverdale, New York. Judy taught history and was a guidance counselor at Bronx High School of Science. In 1970, their son, Kenneth was born, and they moved to North Salem, New York, to live in the “country.”  Judy loved her contemporary home, on a running stream surrounded by woods and wildlife. Classical music filled her house. Judy was once a contestant on Jeopardy and followed the program religiously.

Judy, Bob and Ken enjoyed traveling and took several trips abroad. They also took frequent trips to Connecticut to visit family—her sisters, Janice and Brenda, and their respective families, and brother Myron. Visits were filled with family stories, licorice exchange and grammar lessons. Often, conversations flowed in a stream of consciousness, interspersed with politics and history and lots of humor. Judy was the unofficial family historian.

Judy’s surviving family- her son, Ken, daughter-in-law, Tina, and grandson, Ethan, her sisters Janice Grower and Brenda Roth and her brother-in-law, David Roth, her nieces, Kathy Barkin, Dana Roth and nephews, Robert Grower, Richard Roth, and Daniel Roth- will miss her terribly.

Judy’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks for the loving care of both her doctor, Sharon Krieger, MD and nurses Dawn Schaefer, Donna Dimmitt, Louise Peruzza, Tess Sanding, Maria Silva, Michelle Dodd and Christen Assenza.

A Graveside Service will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 14th at 12:00 pm at Peach Pond Cemetery, Route 121, North Salem, NY 10560.
