Greg was born on November 14th 1963 in Livingston, New Jersey to Kathleen and Benjamin Needell. He was a graduate of Stratton Mountain School in South Londonderry, Vermont and St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY, where he received a BA in History, competed and was Co-Captain of the St. Lawrence ski racing team on the NCAA circuit. Greg had over forty years of experience in the sport of alpine ski racing. He was a U.S. Ski Team men’s national alpine team coach for eight years and directed club programs domestically and internationally for many years, most recently with the Aspen Ski Club and Team Summit in Copper Mountain, CO. Greg was the creative mind behind the widely-read The World Cup According to Grande through skiracing.com and his own Alpine Race Consulting, which has been acclaimed by its avid followers for its technical and tactical insights, as well as its readability and wit. Greg is the beloved husband of Shannon Sohr Needell and is the loving father of Coen Needell. He is also the devoted uncle of Caroline and Harry Needell and Edith, Emily and Jane Hollander. Greg is survived by his sister, Claire Needell Hollander, of Larchmont, NY, his brother, Jonathan Needell, of Coto de Caza, CA, his sister-in law, Christine Needell and his parents, Kathleen and Benjamin Needell of Pound Ridge, NY. A funeral service will be held at Clark Associates Funeral Home, 4 Woods Bridge Road, Katonah, NY 10536 on Monday, June 13th at 2pm.
