Obituary of Kenneth N. Hodgins

Kenneth Noel Hodgins, 83, departed this life on August 20, 2022.  A resident of Lewisboro for 52 years, he also wintered in Tamarac, Florida.  

 

Kenneth was born on December 22, 1938 in the Bronx to Charles Hodgins and Louise Chillingworth Hodgins.  He grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and graduated from Fort Hamilton High School. 

 

He attended Wagner College, Staten Island, and graduated in 1961.  While at Wagner, he joined the ROTC and completed basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey.  He was honorably discharged in 1966.  He did postgraduate work at Hunter College and was a lifelong learner, attending classes at Westchester Community College and Pace University. 

 

He began his teaching career at New Rochelle Academy, where he taught Geography, Social Studies and History.  Thereafter, he taught in the New York City School System for many years, retiring from Adlai Stevenson High School in 2001. 

 

Among other articles, he published “The Art of Questioning,” in The HANDBOOK FOR TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES and co-authored EXPLORING CIVILIZATIONS: A DISCOVERY APPROACH, a textbook used in the New York City School System.

 

He was appointed to the Standing Committee on Social Studies Bureau of Curriculum, New York City Board of Education and elected Treasurer, Association of Teachers of Social Studies in New York City, for 8 years.  He appeared in Who’s Who in the East, 18th edition. 

 

Kenneth was a dedicated teacher who enthusiastically supported his students and celebrated their academic successes.  Kenneth was a long-term member of the American Legion. 

 

Family and friends know how much Ken loved animals. He would stop his car to rescue turtles from oncoming traffic; he put a lamed Pekin duck in one of his bathtubs to spend the winter, and designed the Waldorf Astoria of chicken coops to house chicks hatched as a kindergarten science project.

 

Kenneth leaves behind his beloved wife of 58 years, Laura Torres Hodgins; siblings Roberta Monzingo (Richard), Pamela Hodgins Bernstein (Steven.)  Kenneth was predeceased by his parents and a daughter, Geena Torres Hodgins. 

 

Interment was on Friday,  August 26 at South Salem Cemetery
