Dear Ann: I was so sorry to hear about the sudden death of Ave. I wanted, rather belatedly, to share a memory I have of Ave from a September 2012 Backroads trip he, Bob and I - along with a few other WCC members - went on. On our first full day in Avignon, before the bike trip actually began, Ave and I both shook off our jet leg and together explored the city. For hours and hours we strolled along the cobblestoned streets, gazed up at the centuries-old building exteriors, threaded our way through the ever-present cafes, and walked through each of the four quadrants of the old city. Ave’s wonderment and curiosity were contagious…characteristics he carried with him throughout his life. We are all better having shared time with Ave. All my love, Susan Werbe.

I met Ave soon after I started riding with Westchester Cycle Club. Have to say he schooled me about riding safe and the importance of teamwork and clear communication while group riding. Ave enthusiastically embraced the responsibility of being a ride leader and taught us all with his unique riding signals and insistence on group safety at all times. He did strive for perfection and his organization from the time he posted a ride until it concluded was the best. Ave was a consistently strong rider and also kept his prize Lynskey in top shape. He would typically be the first to arrive at a ride and the last to leave as he broke down his Lynskey and packed it up with precision for the next ride. He gave our club so much and his enthusiasm was unequaled. I will miss his smile and banter. RIP Ave

I knew Ave for over twelve years. Like others, he was one of the first WCC members I met. I remember many years ago having a problem with the shifting on my bike. After a ride, Ave methodically reindexed my rear derailleur and the bike worked like new. When I got home, I mentioned to my wife that a friend adjusted my gears. She jokingly said she was shocked that I would let anyone touch my “precious” bike. Without thinking I replied, “Well, yeah, but it was Ave.” I thought of him then as a kind of bike guru and that perception never changed.
Ave was a genuinely good person who will be sorely missed. Rest in peace my friend.

We had so many great winter rides in the pandemic winter of 2020, and he even tried to talk me into his social Zwift rides. I will miss him. Andrea Ostheimer

Once in a while that special person comes into your life who makes you smile and warms your heart. Ave was that person for me. I was new to the bike club a couple of years ago and one of the first rides I took with club was led by Ave. Since that ride, I have always looked forward to riding with Ave, and I felt that it was mutual. There were rides during which Ave would sing his repertoire of wedding songs as we rode along. I will miss him dearly, but am so happy that I knew and appreciated Ave, that wonderful singing, kind, cyclist.

So , so sorry for your loss Ann.
Just wanted to share what Ave meant to me as a bike mentor and friend. We all know what a terrific ,If not serious , bike leader he was. He always motivated me to bike strongly and consistently or hang in there on a long bike ride by giving me the “Thumbs Up “while in our pace line.- Funny, how that simple gesture carried so much meaning for me.
We also had a terrific time up in my bungalow for a weekend , just a few miles from Woodstock- we took a few wonderful rides with Andrew Miller as well. Too bad the Museum was closed that day, but he proudly shared his Woodstock stories. I saw firsthand his zest for fitness , health and wellness when he stocked our refrigerator with a multitude of interesting items, maybe bone broth or something lol - and I noticed he was certainly was not a light packer! It was so nice to get to know Ave that weekend in a different light outside our day Wcc rides for many, many years. I ‘ll miss my friend very much. Michael Star

Each time I had the pleasure of riding or speaking with Ave, he was the embodiment of all that is good. Friendly, considerate, thoughtful, enthusiastic and warm, Ave always made me feel like I was the focus of his attention. We in the Rockland Bicycling Club who knew him will never ride down Sickletown Road and forget the man that was born here and carried his friendly spirit everywhere he went.
May his memory be a blessing, always!

Ave, my friend, my riding buddy for 15 years, I'm gonna miss him dearly. Everyone in the WCC knew Ave, he made it a point to welcome new riders, make sure they knew what we were all about - being safe and having fun riding together. He was a one of a kind, had his own fashion style on the bike, and boy did he love riding together with like minded cyclists. I'll miss the thumbs up he always gave me when I caught his wheel, his kabuki style hand signals to keep the passing cars at bay, his smooth sweet baritone voice breaking out into song. He gave me love and encouragement before and after each of my three back surgeries. I appreciated his concern and the praise he laid on me after each comeback, sharing my joy that I could once again keep up with him! Lately, we talked about being mindful of beautiful times on our rides, taking it all in, cherishing the moments. I'm glad we had those time together.

I met Ave back in 2008 when I joined the Westchester Cycle Club. I recall my first ride with Ave. We were riding from Pawling to Kent and back. He was very enthusiastic about cycling, which I loved.
During the years we shared many rides together. Several of Ave’s favorite rides that we rode together were Pawling > Kent, Alice’s Restaurant, New Paltz > Woodstock, Runcible Spoon > Bear Mountain / Harriman and Sheffield Shorty just to name a few. Ave was always up for an adventure ride. Once just the two of us rode from Somers to Sherman, Ct. We had a great time. His passion for music was obvious along with his love for his family and friends.
Ave will be missed. May his memory be a blessing.

It is great to read all these wonderful tributes from Ave's friends at Westchester Cycle Club. I echo them and I can add one observation personal to me.
I have had occasional lapses from riding with WCC. Whenever I would join a ride after one of these absences, Ave would greet me like I was his long-lost best friend. He was so warm and friendly that way.
The first WCC ride we did around Lake Champlain was in 2010. I shot a brief hand-held video starting at the back of the pack as Ave was leading us (it was hard to catch him!).
I will be happy to always remember Ave with that big smile he had when he was doing what he so loved--riding the bike with friends.

I love reading all these posts and being reminded of how people were touched by Ave's person. More than I knew. He was never one to brag or seek credit for something and I guess you could say humble in that way. Ave was my dear, caring, loving, thoughtful brother. I am a relatively slow RailTrail bicyclist, but Ave was so excited to share his love of bicycling with me. Here are a few of my recent favorite photos. Thank you to all for taking the time to post your remembrances . It's heartwarming, and I'm learning how special my brother was to so many. He added to all our lives. I'm so happy I could share this lifetime with him.

Ave was such an integral part of the WCC, it is hard to believe he is gone. He welcomed us on our very first ride with the club, and continued to be a strong presence over these many years. He was not only an avid and accomplished rider, but also a curious, thoughtful and interesting companion, always ready to hear our stories or discuss topical news. As I said, it’s just hard to believe that someone with that much good health and zeal for biking (and life) is no longer with us.

Ave joined WCC in May of 2007 and soon became a fixture of the club. He led his first ride in September of that year and went on to become an avid ride leader and then the rides chair. I got to know Ave at the Holiday party at Coromandal Restaurant in New Rochelle back in 2008. We had the first of many long discussions about music, food and bicycle riding. Ave was always an upbeat and a positive force in the club. He was a big help with the website, always letting me know if something was not quite right or could be improved. He made every ride he was on better than it would have been without him-- more sociable and fun and also safer. Anne and I will miss him a lot.

I’ve met a lot of people through the Westchester Cycle Club but Ave was unique. I don’t know anyone else who took such an interest in other people in the club. When I returned to riding after several months off, Ave welcomed me back and went out of his way to catch up on things.
Ave was always most welcoming to new riders. I was on a ride last month with him when someone new showed up. Even though he wasn’t the ride leader, Ave took the new rider under his wing and made him feel comfortable.
Ave was a real asset to our club. I will miss Ave and hope that his example of caring will rub off on me.

Ave was a friend on and off the bike. But he certainly lived to cycle. His joy in seeking out adventure rides and planning and organizing trips to Europe is something he lived for and he shared his enthusiasm with all of us. And of course our weekly retirement rides were just a little life treat we all shared with him. So Ave will be missed. There is an empty hole in our hearts. And his family is devastated. I send my condolences to Ann and his entire family.

Around this time of year, we will especially miss listening to eclectic music with you, while we celebrate the holidays... you would be tapping away rhythms while you cook, or while we sit around together. Ann said that Ave was a real "mensch". I think perfectly describes Ave. Ave was so kind, friendly and welcoming. We were on many rides together over the years, although I could not keep up with him. Ave was generous in giving advice and I never saw or heard him critical of anyone. We shared the experience of both being at the original Woodstock Festival. When I went to the Museum at Bethel, the first thing i saw was a picture of a 16 year old Ave.

Ave was a wonderful human being, a fine performer, a great ride leader, and a terrific, safe rider. I remember when he sang a set at our Westchester Cycle Club Holiday Party. He was terrific! Although he was a faster rider, he would often come on my rides to schmooze and travel at a relaxed pace. The photo shows my last ride with Ave taken in October of this year, 2022. When I first joined the Westchester Cycle Club Ave was the Rides Chair and he welcomed me to the club (just as he welcomed everyone else). Ave instilled in me a passion for riding and pushed me to become a ride leader. He taught me to always have meticulous route planning and detailed ride descriptions (though no-pone could surpass Ave in the length or level of detail of a description).
Ave pushed me to move up to the B level where he was leading rides and during that time i got to regularly ride with him. During those rides I got regular mentorship and guidance from Ave. He would always support the riders on his rides and encourage us to be better riders and better people. He would also at times post encouraging comments or suggestions on rides he wasn’t even on. Just this past weekend I joined Rob Weismann’s first club lead and I discovered that Ave posted some comments for Rob on the ride chat.
What a loss to the club and to us all.

Please accept my sincerest condolences. I always had a great deal of respect, admiration and warmth for Ave. When I first got into cycling, he was one of the first faces that I saw. Ave, in fact, was the one who put it in my mind that I could do better, even when I doubted myself.
Over the years, we would sing on rides, much to the chagrin of other riders. Ave would start with one song, I would start in with the next one and, we knew the words to each other songs. Due to the hours spent together on rides, I learned about his fascinating life . Woodstock, being a band leader, a father, getting involved in the family’s business and how he loved his wife, Ann (please forgive me if I spell your name wrong). Ann, I only met you once, at your holiday party, last year. You didn’t know me but I was going through kind of a hard time and you were so compassionate towards me. I wish you strength and may Ave’s memory always be a blessing.
Ave, my brother from another mother, I hope you knew how much you positively affected the lives of so many people. When you led a ride, it wasn’t just a ride. It was an event, not to be missed. Your BOOMING voice (“right/left turn”, “car back”, “move right”) was the stuff of legends. Lol. Your “protocol” advise, about riding was firm but compassionate, always given with the intent of keeping the ride safe and making the riders better. It was you, Ave, that kept me cycling and giving me something to look forward to, when things were bleak. You were taken too soon and you will be missed. Rest in peace, brother.

His support, friendship and just that smile in all the pictures leaves such a lasting memory that will always remembered. Over the years I rode with Ave on WCC rides, on a terrific bike trip in France, and for the past few years indoors on Zwift. Ave wanted nothing more than to gather folks together and help them. His tool bag was legendary, he loved to help others with their mechanicals. More recently we rode together on Zwift, where Ave herded the Discord conversations just as he did the riders on the road. As fellow drummers our conversations often drifted into music and his days playing professionally, but Ave mostly talked about life. Ann and Jon, my heart goes out to you. I am so sorry.

Ave was one of the truly great people on planet Earth; we had the same great circle of friends in high school, got expelled together from Hebrew School on the same day in junior high, and were good friends even in grade school. Ave was smart, talented, funny, kind, gracious, generous, and forgiving. I can't think of a single moment ever where he was angry or mean. Though we went our separate ways when we left for college, I was always glad when our paths crossed during the past 50 years. Have a great journey Ave....you of all people deserve it. Bruce Patsner, M.D.

When I joined the WCC in the Fall of 2020, Andy Katell introduced me to Ave as "the most important person in the club!" I was told he was a veteran rider and a leader extraordinaire. After a few rides, I wanted to move up from the C group to Ave's C+ group. He was kind enough to speak to me on the phone and make sure I felt comfortable riding at a faster pace. I always enjoyed rides with Ave. He was quick with a smile and to offer advice on becoming a stronger rider. We discussed his love of family, music, healthy eating, and daily back exercises! He was value added to every ride. I will certainly miss seeing him. Sending your family my deepest condolences. May his memory be a blessing, Allison Wohl.

Ave was unfailingly welcoming and encouraging to other riders, especially new WCC members. He led by example, urging cyclists to ride safely and with respect to everyone on the road. Ave's multicolored ride narratives on the WCC website were legendary for those details and the playfulness that showed how much he loved riding. I'll miss swapping stories about music and growing up in Rockland, and trying to keep up with his pace.

Ave,
I played these three songs for you yesterday on your last ride knowing you would love them:
Interesting that this was the first song that popped up - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUVEFkjqiEE; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaaT_HRb4GU;

I only knew Ave from the many WCC rides we did together. I always looked forward to sharing the ride experience with him. He was a thoughtful, caring person and a very positive influence on all the bike rides that made them more enjoyable. Also, we always had a good time talking politics and music- interests that we shared. His presence will be greatly missed. I send my sincere condolences to the family. May his memory be for a blessing

This picture is from a group trip to Majorca that I was lucky to be a part of. That trip was one of the best weeks of my life.
I am the President of the Westchester Cycle Club and have known Ave for a very long time. Everyone that met him never forgot his kindness and friendliness.
His death will hurt for a very long time and leaves a huge hole in many club member's hearts.
Ave will be missed so much.
