Obituary of Lucy Pedone
Lucy Pedone of Bedford Village, NY, passed into eternal life at Greenwich Hospital on December 22, 2022. She was born 94 years ago in her family’s home in Bedford Hills, NY to parents Valentino and Maria Astrologo. The second of five children and first daughter, Lucy learned the workings of an Italian kitchen, helping prepare family meals, gathering eggs from the chicken coop and vegetables from the garden. Upon graduation from St. Mary’s High School in Katonah, Lucy began a career at Readers Digest putting her strong organizational skills to good practice. She met John Pedone, her future husband of over 60 years, when he would come to visit his aunt, (the Astrologo’s neighbor), who lived “in the country.” They began their married life together in Queens, NY and welcomed their first child, Gary. Returning to live, “in the country,” they welcomed their daughter Gail into their family three years later.
Faith and family were foremost in Lucy’s life. She and John were active members of St. Patrick’s parish in Bedford, NY, partaking in the liturgy, sacraments, and for many years was a CCD catechist. They loved to tell stories of the various activities of the 55+ Club that they attended with fellow parishioners. Large family celebrations and gatherings were a way of life and Gary and Gail grew up among an extended network of aunts, uncles, and cousins. Lucy was a girl scout leader for Gail’s scout troop and a “cheerleader”, “equipment manager”, and “taxi driver” for Gary’s little league games and swim club.
Lucy reveled in her role as Grandma and her four grandchildren are blessed to have a lifetime of wonderful memories. Kilei recalls building forts from sheets and chairs and the two of them having fabulous picnics hidden away from everyone. Jonathan, “One of my favorite memories of Grandma was every time we’d come and visit her, she’d make us her famous pot roast from scratch. She also told us how she did it every time and it never got old.” Erin loved spending time at Muscoot Farm visiting the animals and listening to grandma teach her all about the chickens and how they lay eggs. Making “midnight snacks” with grandma, ferris wheel rides at the carnival, and swimming in the town pool are some of Devin’s fondest memories.
Travel, yoga, adventures with her children and grandchildren, listening to big band and the crooners, making her famous or perhaps “infamous” pot roast dinners and chocolate cream pies kept Lucy busy after her retirement as a cafeteria worker at Fox Lane High School.
Lucy is survived by her son Gary (Arleen), and daughter Gail Nelson. Her loving grandchildren are Devin and Erin Pedone, Kilei and Jonathan Nelson. She was preceded in death by her husband John, siblings, Rocco (Rocky), Elizabeth (Betty), Guiseppe (Joey), and Angelina (Angie), and son-in-law Scott Nelson.
