Obituary of Joan Ackermann

Joan Ann O’Gorman Ackermann, 82, passed peacefully in her favorite comfy chair looking out at the spring awakening of the beautiful backyard garden that she loved so much.  She was the beloved mother of Barbara Ackermann, Gregory Ackermann (dec.), and Karen Pietropaolo (Steven), and her two adoring grandsons, Nicholas and Daniel. She was cherished by her brothers and sisters, John O’Gorman (dec.), Mary Keller (dec.), Florence Roche, Kathleen Morrissey, and James O’Gorman (dec.).

Joan loved to garden, was an avid reader, and was always known for a great joke.

Joan was born in the Bronx, grew up and raised her family in Pelham, and spent the remainder of her life in Somers, NY. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1961, and a Registered Nurse in 1972.  As a single mother raising three children, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Pace University and Master’s Degree from Long Island University.  She became a Nursing Home Administrator and lead the St. Joseph’s Geriatric Day Care Program, worked at 30/30 Park, the Smith House, the Hebrew Hospital Home, and St. Joseph’s Nursing Home.  She made a difference everywhere she went, and was greatly loved and respected by all that worked with her.

She retired in 2000 to lend a helping hand in raising her two grandsons: Nicholas, and Daniel. She truly adored them, and was so happy to be such an important part of their lives.

Joan kept herself busy with the Women’s Civic Club of Katonah, the Katonah Gift Shop, and the Lewisboro Ladies Club.  She was the dedicated bartender and comedian at many of the Ladies Club functions. She traveled all over Europe and spent time visiting her beloved Ireland.

She was kind and generous and always smiling. Family was everything to her.  She will be truly missed by all that knew her and everyone has fond memories of what a fantastic lady she was.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 at Clark Associates Funeral Home, Katonah, NY from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at 11:00am at St. Patrick's Church, 137 Moseman Avenue, Yorktown Heights, NY. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 10 West Stevens Avenue, Hawthorne, NY.
