I was a young pharmaceutical sales representative back in 1998 when I had the pleasure of meeting this beautiful soul. I was only a sales rep for two years, and I hated it. But Dr. Cat always cheered me up and encouraged me. He could read me, and I could tell he cared for others. He knew I was going through the motions. (He never wrote any of my overly expensive products, good for him!)
One day he surprised me with some recorded VHS episodes of the Sopranos, coupled with a brand new two VHS tape edition of "The Godfather." Dr. Cat loved his mafia movies. He would talk about them often. He told me how one of his favorite pastimes in medical school was to go to the movies.
I have lost touch, but never forgot Dr. Cat. I am very sad to hear of his passing. It's a great loss.

I was so lucky to be able to attend Dr. Cats send off. The “Saturday night” real live movie would have made him proud. The celebration honored, a loving Human, who was so much more that just a doctor. With humor and raw honesty his friends and family delighted in all that he was and all the cherished memories that will remain.
My deepest sympathies to Gladys, Michael, Maria, Ben,Maria Jean, Chris and Ben III….
May he rest in peace…..

Every single member of our office looked forward to seeing Ben when he would come in.
Best. Smile. Ever.
The only smile bigger would be from an old patient of his, thrilled at the opportunity to see their beloved Dr. Cat after years apart.
Never one to slack off on his workouts (and even on his 90th birthday!), Ben would ride the stationary bike for sometimes 20 minutes before his appointment and then hit the arm bike with the effort of those half his age.
We had so many great conversations over the years. You could see pure joy in his eyes when we’d talk about movies, his career as a pediatrician, his patients, his family, his Applebees and most of all…his Gladys. Too in love (and a little scared) to ever say anything less than glowing about her, he routinely thanked God for allowing him to have her in his corner all these years. He was smitten.
Keep up with your exercises Ben! You will be missed but never forgotten.
All our love,
Neil, Laura, Aidan and Brandon Chernick and all the staff at Focal Physical Therapy

Dear Sweet Ben, Dr Cat, as I called him
He greeted me with open arms when I joined MKMG over 20 years ago. His compassion and empathy for his patients and their parents was truly a testament to the type of man he was. Generous, kind, caring and comforting.
Over the years he not only taught me to be a better physician but also a better person. He shared so many wonderful stories that always taught me something by the time he was done. I am grateful and fortunate to have had Dr.Cat in my life and will always treasure those stories.
My condolences to his beautiful and loving wife, Gladys and his children and the entire family.
Non posso piu , Dr Cat.
All my love, Emily

Ben “Dr. Cat” exemplified the best in the practice of medicine. It was an honor to have been lucky enough to be welcomed as one of his colleagues. Ben was a role model for me, as well, for also being the child of poor immigrants from Italy, first to go to college and become an MD because “it would be nice to have a doctor in the family.” He was able to share a special brilliance and valuable insight with a demeanor that very few could do. I just want Ben’s family to know that he was special to not only dozens of us but to thousands of us who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with this special soul.

We will always remember Dr. Cat fondly! When my wife and I joined the NWH medical community in 1992, Ben greeted us with warmth and kindness. He and Gladys gave us small crystal ornaments at Christmas time for several years running. We always think of them each year as we decorate our tree! He will truly be missed.
