Obituary of Byron Nicas
Byron Nicas, son of Demosthenes and Helen Nicas, born Dec. 13, 1946 passed on Aug. 3, 2023.
He was stricken with a brain aneurysm in the early morning of Dec. 11, 2022 two days before his 76th birthday.
Born in the Bronx, he was a brilliant mind who graduated Bronx High School of Science, attended City College, and later earned a BS in Math and Computer Programming at Fordham University.
His degree brought him eventually to Citigroup where as a Managing Director of Risk Management he wrote intricate computer codes, building the Basel system of computer and banking supervision.
He chose his eventual home site in Irvington, NY, where he enjoyed walks along the Hudson River with his beloved grandson Vincent Paul. He was a lover of blues, bluegrass and country music. He delighted in learning the old licks and songs of Americana.
He was an avid student of languages, and taught himself to speak Greek fluently. Even trading English for Albanian lessons from dear friends.
Nothing brought Byron more joy then watching his grandson Vincent play baseball, watching trains with him or teaching him math. Dinners with the little guy were the highlight of his week, and his nightly calls were how he’d end his day.
“Little guy” was by far the joy of “Pappu’s” life.
He is survived by his son Frank (Panagiota), grandson Vincent Paul, brothers Thomas (Cynthia) and Mark Nicas (Jennifer), Franks mother: Caroline, step daughter Fran, step granddaughter Carolyn Marie, cousins Ronnie Lefkowitz, (Joseph) Kurt Meyers (Sarah) and Victor Pappas (Shelley) six nieces and nephews, Gabrielle, Demo, Tera, Ralphael, Alicia and Christopher, as well as seven great nieces and nephews, John, Benjamin, Eric, Melanie, Joshua, Gregory, and Michelle.
His family will receive friends on Friday, August 11th from 10:00 am to 11:30 am at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 10 Mill Road, New Rochelle, NY 10804 with the funeral service beginning at church at 11:30 am.
Interment will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery, 280-284 Secor Road, Hartsdale, NY
