My dad, Joe Longo, was a radioman 3rd class submariner on the USS Nautilus SSN-571. Back in 2008, when I told him I had accepted a job with GDIT, he was thrilled. He loved that boat and the time he spent with his shipmates. I cherish the stories he shared with me about his Navy days.
My dad passed away in the fall of 2021. His last request was for his burial at sea via a sub. I told him I would make it happen.
A couple of days after my dad's 80th birthday, he began his final voyage on the USS New Mexico SSN 779, to be buried at sea, departing from Norfolk, VA. The burial at sea ceremony occurred on the ship's bridge on August 25, 2023, at 12:40 EST at 36 41.41N, 075 19. 39W. The afternoon was cool, with slight winds and seas. Under these favorable conditions, the religious ceremony was conducted with dignity and solemnity. LTJG Elijah Hornback, the ship's catholic lay leader, performed the ceremony and the committal.
The cool part of the story…SSN 779 has some history, too. Like the Nautilus, she represents the most advanced submarine model in the U.S. Navy today, incorporating the latest technologies in stealth, propulsion, intelligence gathering, and weaponry. In March 2014, New Mexico became the first Virginia-class submarine to surface at the North Pole.
I find it fitting that my dad was on the first sub to go under the North Pole and that his final voyage was on the first Virgina class sub to surface at the North Pole.
Dad, you passed into Eternal Patrol. Your duty is complete. Let the men and women of the U.S. Navy take up your oar.
I will always love you and never forget!

I had the pleasure of dealing with Joe for many years when he was with Corner. What a great guy, everyone in the industry who knew him held him in high regard. We did some good business, shared many laughs and created some wonderful memories over the years. I tried to look him up to finally reconnect only to find out he's gone, so sad. My belated condolences to his family. God speed Joe...
Sincerely,
Joe Frattasi

My heartfelt condolences to the family of my Shipmate Joe Longo. We served on the Nautilus together oh, these many long years ago. Yeah, back when we were young and handsome. I remember the time he... Uh, well, that story is for when we're tipping one or three. We lost touch over the years and if he went, we never met up at a reunion - too bad, we could have relived old times and seen who was the biggest liar.

Mike "Frenchy" LeCompte CPO, USN (Ret.)

Dad,
I am sitting on the train heading back to DC. I want to let you know that we all will be Ok. I spent the week with mom. She is strong and will survive. I know you may not be here in a physical sense and I also know you are always going to be with me. I love you more than I can express in words. I had the best dad a kid can ever want!

My condolences to Donna, Rob and Andy. Joe brought stickball (a really big deal) to Headden Drive, and he was out with us every evening playing catch in the Longo backyard. Terrific memories. — David Nissenbaum
