Obituary of Robert L. Ganung

Ganung, Robert L. Sr., ”Bob” 95 of Daytona Beach, Florida,  formerly of Katonah, NY died Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at Wilton Meadows Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Wilton, CT.

Bob was born on November 15, 1927, in Mt.Kisco, NY to the late Leon and Mary Ganung of Katonah.  Bob grew up in Katonah graduating from Katonah High school in 1946. He did well in baseball, basketball, and football and signed a contract with the Philadelphia Athletics organization where he played for 3 years. Bob was also a Sergeant in the United States Army and while serving, he was a member of the Fort Bliss Falcons Baseball team who won the 4th Army championship in 1949. Bob saw combat action in North Korea and was awarded the distinguished Combat Infantryman’s badge as well 3 Unit Citation Stars. After leaving the Service, Bob studied engineering before becoming an Electrician and joining the Local 501 Electrical Workers Union and was a General Foreman working on such building projects as the General Foods World Headquarters as well as the American Can Corporation in southern Westchester. Bob was active in the community serving as a member of the Katonah Fire Department for 50 years and had the honor of driving the last fire engine out of the old firehouse on Katonah Avenue to its present location on Bedford Road. Bob also coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams.  In his leisure time he enjoyed bowling, softball and especially golf in his retirement years. Bob’s true passion was fly fishing on his beloved Battenkill River.

Bob was the beloved husband of Josephine (nee De Sole) “JoJo “and loving father of Donna (Ornstein) of South Salem, NY, Dr. Robert Ganung, Jr., of Watertown, CT and Steven Ganung of Ridgefield, CT.  Bob was also the loving grandfather “Papa”  to Libby, Katie, Ted, Kelly, Stevie and Tory as well as 7 great grandchildren.

The family will have a private graveside service lead by Bob’s son, Reverend Dr. Robert Ganung and Bob will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Josephine at the Union Valley Cemetery located at 730 Union Valley Road, Mahopac NY.
